From Petition Organizer: Supporters generated from our petition were actively engaged by the ACLU of Maryland in their campaign efforts to repeal the Death Penalty in MD.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland (ACLU-MD), in partnership with a broad coalition, is fighting to finally repeal the death penalty in Maryland. Repealing capital punishment would allow the state to eliminate racial and jurisdictional bias, reduce unnecessary costs, eliminate the risk of convicting and executing an innocent person, and help the survivors of homicide victims get the care they need.

Marylanders value fairness and equality. By a margin of 60 percent to 33 percent, Marylanders say life without parole is an acceptable alternative to the death penalty, according to a January 2011 poll by Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies. No jury or judge has imposed a new death sentence in Maryland since 2004. The time has come to do away with it once and for all.

I pledge to support repeal of the death penalty in Maryland.

When exactly 0% of people in our criminal justice system are innocent and punished wrongfully, then I will support the death penalty.
