Prime Minister Perry G. Christie: Stop Plans to Construct a Cruise Ship or Ferry Docking Terminal off Bimini's Western Shore.

    1. Petition by

      Bimini Blue Coalition

Bimini's economic and ecological future depends upon keeping our waters clean, our reefs healthy, and our fisheries thriving. In order to preserve the tourism industry that has sustained these islands for decades, we insist that all current and future development proposals respect and protect the ecological integrity of Bimini and all of our surrounding ecosystems.

The current proposal being put forth by Genting's newly acquired Resorts World Bimini Bay calls for the creation of a massive cruise ship terminal off the western shore of North Bimini. These plans include a 1000 ft dock extending west off North Bimini's beaches, the creation of a large man-made island offshore, and an enormous amount of related dredging. All of this is being proposed in an area of densely populated coral reef habitat.

The damage to the surrounding reefs will be catastrophic, and the landscape of Bimini will be forever transformed.

We are calling on Prime Minister Perry G. Christie to halt these proposals and demand that a new plan be developed. Any new proposals put forth must NOT adversely impact Bimini's reefs or marine ecosystems, must NOT negatively affect the North Bimini Marine Reserve, must NOT negatively impact the quality of life or property value of North Bimini's residents and homeowners, and should take into consideration the ideas and concerns of Bimini's residents, stakeholders, and homeowners.

Prime Minister Perry G. Christie
Stop Plans to Construct a Ship Terminal off Bimini’s western shores.

Resorts World is being extremely irresponsible regarding the development and construction of their new "Resort" on Bimini. From illegal dredging to failing to mitigate the damaging effects to local *ENDANGERED* habitats, Resorts World has done it all. They have already tried to convince Florida to change their gambling laws to accommodate a new casino. Who's to say they won't try to sway Bimini's government in similar issues? They've already convinced officials to "forget" about a revolutionary marine protected area. Resorts World does not care about Bimini's unique ecology, nor do they care how their Resort will impact Bimini's environment and locals. They say they care, but their actions prove otherwise. They are failing to contain the sediment displaced from dredging (because they're using inadequate and useless equipment) and are proposing more projects detrimental to the mangroves and coral reefs. IN the long run, this project will damage local and distant environments, economies, and cultures if allowed to develop.

There really is no reason why the pier should be built because the Biminites do not agree, environmentalists are outraged, and the environment that would be destroyed if the pier was built would be so drastic. There is no going back from such a decision and really it is ruining the entire reason why Bimini is visited in the first place. Resorts World has no proof that their expected amount of tourists would actually visit, therefore rendering the only point of the project useless. Overall, Resorts World is a big business that is just taking what it can where it can, taking advantage of the Bahamas and the Biminites.

I am doing a high school marine biology trip to bimini for a week and we have been learning about how detrimental the actions of resorts world have proved to be to corals and the surrounding ecosystems.

I am visiting Bimini and I have been researching the different ecosytems of Bimini and why the construction of the dock would negatively effect the ecosystem. I felt it was my my duty knowing this information to sign this petition and do what I can do help and help save they beautiful Bimini ecosystems
