Save Amanda Knox from a Re-Trial

    1. Petition by

      Nathaniel Morris

      Newport News, VA

In 2007, Amanda Knox - an American college student living and studying abroad - were arrested in Italy and charged with the murder of Meredith Kercher.

Despite a weak case from the prosecution, Knox was held in an Italian prison for nearly four years throughout the duration of her trial. In December of 2011, Knox was acquitted and released from prison. She returned home with her family in Seattle in the hopes of moving forward with the rest of her life.

However, news broke this morning that Italian officials are demanding that Knox - who has already been found not guilty - stand trial for murder AGAIN.

In America, once a person has been found 'not guilty' of a crime, it is their constitutional right to never have to stand trial for that crime again.

What is happening to Amanda Knox is unfair and unjust. The prosecution could not create a solidified case when they had the chance - and they should not be able to torture an American citizen with endless re-trials.

This petition is a demand from the American people that our government stand up for the rights of Amanda Knox, denounce the re-trial, and protect this young woman with every political and legal tool at their disposal.

Mr. President, Mr. Attorney General, Members of Congress - I implore you to rise to the occasion, protect Amanda Knox from this retrial, and set a precedent that the United States will not allow its citizens to be treated unjustly by the legal systems of foreign nations.

To:
President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, and Members of Congress
I implore you to rise to the occasion, protect Amanda Knox from a retrial in Italy, and set a precedent that the United States will not allow its citizens to be treated unjustly by the legal systems of foreign nations.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Because she is clearly innocent and the Italian police have done an awful job of investigating this crime.

The United States routinely invests money and time to secure human rights for all people around the world. Although Italy has a right to follow its legal system, in this case the defendant is an American citizen who is being treated unjustly. I believe my government should protect its citizens, if another nation is acting unjustly. After all, the United States protects people in foreign countries from their own governments. Don't we owe the same to our own citizens?

These petitions are necessary to protect the rights of world citizens. If the State Department would view records including Amanda's report in book, they would find a total lack of due process. Absence of council was denied until Amanda was charged and sentenced to up to 1 year in prison. the Massi court failed to follow Italy's own laws when the court refused defense access to DNA and all information in the case. Italy also has a law which states all interrogations will be recorded, no such recording has been produced. We the People fought for these very, signature laws of rights, in 1776, 1863, 1942, Italy needs to produce a reason as to why they have failed to follow protocol and procedures in this case, involving a citizen of the United States.
