Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of Neng Yang and his family and for signing our Change.Org petition. Over 6,000 of you joined together to stand for justice and justice was finally served. After waiting over one year, a jury trial took place on May 22 and 23 in Vinita, Oklahoma. Osborn showed no remorse for what he had done and still insisted he acted in self-defense. The jury found the defendant, Scott Osborn, guilty of felony aggravated assault and battery and sentenced him to one year in county jail and a $500 fine. The prosecution will request Osborn pay restitution for Yang’s medical expenses at the July 16 sentencing. Osborn was immediately taken into custody and will remain in jail until the July 16 official sentencing. While this sentence is nowhere close to the 5 years in prison that the prosecution asked for, we are glad that the Yang family has closure and Osborn is where he should be—behind bars. Over 50 community members rallied during the days of the trial to show support for Neng and his family. Many also rallied online by posting pictures and messages of support to their Twitter and Facebook. Several news outlets covered the story and links to coverage are below: News on 6 – May 21, 2012 – http://www.newson6.com/story/18576265/trial-begins-for-man-charged-in-beating-over-dogs-death?clienttype=printable Vinita Daily Journal – May 24, 2012 – http://hndinc.org/resources/1/2011%20Docs/VDJ%205-23-12%20Neng%20Yang%20case.pdf Vinita Daily Journal – May 25, 2012 – http://hndinc.org/resources/1/2011%20Docs/VDJ%205-25-12%20Neng%20Yang%20case.pdf Tulsa World – May 24, 2012 – http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=14&articleid=20120524_11_A4_ULNSbO357551 Hmong National Development also provided real-time Twitter coverage of the trial, which can be viewed on their Twitter page at https://twitter.com/#!/HNDinc or by searching #justice4neng on Twitter. The criminal case is over but a civil suit may follow. In the meantime, local community organizers are still collecting donations and selling solidarity t-shirts for anyone who would like to help support the family and offset the over $70,000 in medical bills the family has accrued. March 8, 2011 Scott Osborn age 29, 6’1 and 250 pounds severely assaulted Neng Yang, who is 5 feet. Neng Yang accidentally ran over one of Osborn’s dogs that chased his car. When Mr. Yang realized he hit the dog, he reversed his car and apologized to Scott Osborn, who was with his young son. Mr. Yang offered to pay for the dog repeatedly but Scott Osborn attacked Mr. Yang. After assaulting Mr. Yang, Osborn took Mr. Yang’s hand and said, “We’re cool, now don’t do anything stupid.”
Mr. Yang injuries include shattered bones to his face, two broken ribs and bruises on his leg. According to his daughter, Pashia Yang, Mr. Yang has plates in his cheekbones, a reconstruction nose, and his jaw had to be shifted because it was not aligned.
According to the sheriffs, Scott Osborn admitted to hitting Mr. Yang one time. Scott Osborn said he was afraid for his life and that is why he assaulted Mr. Yang.
Scott Osborn is a former prison guard. Justice must be served and Scott Osborn must be punished! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Boqsb_MFJk0
