Origin Energy and Imparja: Stop sponsoring goat racing events

When letters and emails to Qantas and Origin went un-replied, we created a petition on Change.org. At 900 signatures Qantas contacted us to inform us that they have decided to refuse further support of goat racing events. The following statement was issued by Qantas Corporate Communication: “Qantas shares the community’s concerns regarding the ethical treatment of animals. As background, Qantas has previously sponsored Roma’s Easter in the Country Festival by providing the organisers with return air fares. In 2012, the organisers made the decision to use some of these air fares as prizes for the Goat Races, without consulting Qantas. Qantas is not a sponsor of the 2013 Easter in the Country Festival.” Following this, The Easter in the Country Festival organisers in Roma confirmed that there will be no goat races for the next two years. However Origin had not contacted us and we were unaware if they will still support the festival if the goat races return. Locals in Roma told us that Origin will still support the festival if/when the goat races return in 2015. On the 19th of February, at 2014 signatures, Origin announced they would not support the festival while goat races continue. Their statement said: “We have withdrawn support for the Roma Easter in the Country Festival and notified the organisers of our decision.” We are pleased to see two companies make this ethical decision.

Over the last few years, Animal Liberation investigators have witnessed one of the cruelest animal abusing ‘sports’ in Australia: wild goat racing.
Frightened goats are captured, auctioned, harassed and distressed, dragged across a raceway and harnessed to a cart. Children as young as 4 years old are encouraged to be ‘jockeys’ and sometimes heavy adults ride the goats creating a large weight disparity for the animal. The goats and riders are released, and chaos occurs.
Children are thrown off carts while frightened goats collapse onto the ground. Goats crash head first into fences, some goats bleed, some goats knocking themselves unconscious, while children lay on the ground in a foetal position attempting to tend to their injuries.
Roma goat races in QLD ran only two races last year as sponsors had threatened to pull out if the goat races continued. However, this year the goat races are back on and sponsors are still supporting the event.

      Congratulations Qantas!

I am not signing this. However as somebody who has watched 20+ years of goat races, I just wanted to post a link to something I have written to help people see what actually goes on. http://slightlymoredepththanateaspoon.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/because-people-from-country-are.html

Because it is cruel and the ignorance of people who partake of this sport is frightening. They need to know that it is not ok to treat animals in this way.

This is yet another form of animal torture. This is beyond horrific. Humans should be protecting animals, in every circumstance.

This is a cruel & unnecessary spectacle and just frightens these animals- it must be stopped! Shame on Australia.
