Maribyrnong Council: Urgently review laws that prohibit responsible backyard chicken keeping.

We, the residents of the City Of Maribyrnong, call on the Council to urgently review Domestic Animal Management policies in order to support responsible chicken owners in Maribyrnong. In particular, we call for a review of the distance requirements outlined in General Purposes Local Laws 52.3 as we believe these regulations exclude the majority of residential properties in the City.

We believe Council's local laws regarding poultry keeping to be incredibly impractical and in desperate need of a change to be more inline with other local Councils as well as Council’s own Food Security Policy.

We want a policy that is supportive of sustainable living and good animal husbandry, not arbitrary measurements.

I don't understand why the council runs 'how to keep chook' classes yet doesn't allow us to keep chooks! In this modern age where so much is known about the benefits of chickens and the backyard veggie patch this is unfathomable.

I have always wanted chickens but these laws exclude me from keeping them. Chickens kept properly do not carry or transmit diseases to humans so extreme laws like this are a total overreaction
