My grandchildren mean the world to me, and I’d do anything for them. That includes doing what I can to slow down climate change so they grow up in a livable world. And I believe students should be taught the truth about climate change in school to inspire them to develop the solutions we need.
On October 14, the Education Committee in the Kentucky legislature will vote on the adoption of new science standards that include climate science for my grandchildren and all K-12 students. Unfortunately, a small group of climate deniers and anti-science activists are trying to keep Kentucky kids in the dark by stopping these Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) from being taught.
Last month, another Kentucky legislative committee voted against the new science standards. Even though Governor Steve Beshear stepped up for our kids and overrode that committee, there is now talk of legislation being introduced to stop implementation of the NGSS.
After his committee voted against NGSS last month, Kentucky Senator Joe Bowen said: “From one end of the state to the other, the people of this commonwealth are not ready to embrace these standards for a variety of reasons.”
Let’s show Sen. Bowen he has it backwards, and that while he is being barraged by a vocal minority, the overwhelming majority of Kentuckians want our kids to have access to the best possible science education, including climate science.
If our kids are going to find solutions to the challenges brought on by climate change, they need the scientific facts, and passing the NGSS is a key step in making that happen. Let’s make sure the Kentucky legislators hear the message loud and clear that we want them to do the right thing for our children and grandchildren.
