Justice for Puppy Doe: Tell Craigslist to Help Stop Violence Against Pets

    1. Joyel Ennis
    2. Petition by

      Joyel Ennis

      Boston, MA

This petition will be sent to Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's CEO.

On August 31st 2013, a young, small, female dog named ‘Puppy Doe’ was found brutally tortured in a Quincy, Massachusetts park, and we were all left wondering who could let this happen to any animal. The dog’s injuries were so violent and severe that the only humane thing to do was to euthanize her. She had been starved, burned, stabbed, and limbs pulled from her joints in what’s been described as a “medieval’ style torture.

It was later determined that the original owner of the dog had to give her up for undermined reasons. According to media reports, the owner decided to put the dog, named Kiya, up for adoption on Craigslist. Craigslist is often a go-to source for animal abusers looking for victims because it is anonymous and there is no accountability or screening process like regular shelters and rescue groups provide. I'm asking Craigslist to change their policies on these re-homing ads, and only allow registered shelters and rescues to post adoptable pets so it is never again a part of tragedies like what happened to Puppy Doe.

The before and after pictures of "Puppy Doe" speak for themselves. How many more times does this have to happen before Craigslist stops allowing people to give their pets away to strangers without any background checks or accountability? They already prohibit the sale of these animals, so I want them to update their policy to not allow the re-homing of pets by anyone not working for a registered shelter or rescue group that is able to conduct background checks to make sure animals are placed in loving homes.

I'm passionate about this cause because no animal should have to suffer anything close to what 'Puppy Doe' endured.  I'm a passionate animal lover who grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts and remember playing at the playground where Puppy Doe was found.  I’ve tested the Craigslist platform since this horrendous incident and there are no warnings whatsoever on the ‘Pets’ section about the dangers of posting these re-homing ads. These are breathing, feeling, loving animals we’re talking about, not old sofas or televisions -- we need to challenge Craigslist to do better by adopting a new policy that protects these vulnerable animals.

It's beyond words that this sweet, innocent dog, that once knew love had to suffer this violent, evil fate. If actions were taken to change the "free to a good home" style ads, there would be some justice in Puppy Doe's name knowing that another pet will never suffer such violence as a result of being dumped on Craigslist.

I have been gutted since the moment I heard about Puppy Doe, and recalled hearing about the "dog serial killer" who tortured dogs he collected off of Craigslist last year, along with other countless horror stories. Also, we must not forget the story of the notorious Boston 'Craigslist Killer' murders which led Craigslist to ban the "erotic services" section on their site.

I believe strongly that this petition is an effective way to make a difference. I will take it as far as it can possibly go to make sure Craigslist updates its policy to not allow any re-homing of animals through its site unless done by proper shelters and rescue groups.

To Puppy Doe: Rest in Peace sweet angel girl, and know that there are thousands of people who love you and are seeking justice.

    2. Fact: This Monster Bought Her From a Craigslist Pet Ad

      Joyel Ennis

This has been confirmed moments ago at the arraignment at Quincy District Court. Puppy Doe was re-homed TWICE on Craigslist, ending up in the hands of this vile, sick, individual. Police have confirmed that he looked at pet ads on Craigslist, and the two people who re-homed Puppy Doe confirmed from his picture that it was indeed him. The authorities have also matched cell phone records.

The prosecutors presented hard evidence that showed there was "blood, fur, paws marks in dried up blood, and scratches on the door." Many of Puppy Doe's supporters in attendance broke down in tears.

Despite all of these FACTS, Craigslist continues to ignore our pleas, and apparently, refuses to even THINK about making changes to the pets section.

The arrest today is a blessing, and the news that it is a FACT that Puppy Doe was obtained by this sick person through Craigslist only adds fuel to our fire. We will not back down.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been working on a proposal that will allow Craigslist to keep the Pets section, but still hold both posters and potential adopters accountable. This was sent to them 10 days ago, and I have yet to receive a response. I will keep everyone updated.

http://tinyurl.com/kswzcph Police in Athens, Alabama charged a man with 22 counts of animal cruelty after he admitted to buying kittens from Craigslist, then killing them in what he called his "cat room" where he would stomp on them or "wring their necks" to kill them. Yet, Craigslist still seems to think they're not part of the problem. This is why 282,000 people who have signed my Change.org petition agree it's time for Craigslist to change their policies regarding re-homing pets, so that those posting pets and potential adopters are held accountable for the welfare of these helpless animals.

Clearly, thousands of us agree that the time has finally come for Craigslist to change their policies on this matter. To those misguided few out there, that say some bad always comes with good and believe that Craigslist ads are a matter of "buyer beware," what you seem to forget is that animals cannot make decisions for themselves. Without choice in the matter, they rely on us imperfect human beings to do right by them and by continuing to allow the pets section to be a free-for-all for just anyone to dump off, or pick up a living, breathing, feeling, loving being, we are continuing to fail these voiceless, vulnerable animals.

Yet another case of animal torture that started with a Craigslist post in 2010.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to sign & share. My response to Mr. Newmark's insulting response on his blog still stands. "Monsters" as he called them, don't go to shelters that check references, charge adoption fees, and check ID, nor do they turn to the many wonderful rescues out there that do the same and even go the extra mile and require home visits - they instead, go to sites like Craigslist to pick up their helpless victims where thousands of people are free to post their pets as simply as they can post an ad for their old tube TV they no longer want.

Jim Buckmaster of Craigslist is trying to mislead people about his company's role in these violent incidents against animals. I'm not asking for the 'Pets' section to be shut down. I'm just asking that the current policy on pets be updated so re-homing animals is instead left to the expert shelters and rescue groups set up to do proper background checks.

It's important to note that Buckmaster doesn't deny that Puppy Doe was acquired through Craigslist before being tortured. More than 38,000 people so far have signed my petition at Change.org/PuppyDoe, and we are only growing in our call for Craigslist to make the responsible decision.

Dear Mr. Buckmaster, I am writing in response to the Puppy Doe incident. I have three dogs myself and no children. Honestly, these animals, like for many others, are my children. I feel very strongly that it is our responsibility to protect lesser creatures from those who seek to do them harm. Pets are more than our companions ... they are our responsibility. You have an opportunity to make the world a little safer for those who can not protect themselves. There is an unwritten understanding that items are purchased in good faith for humane practices. Unfortunately, in today's world there are many people who abuse this. It has become necessary for shelters to practice great care in the placement of animals ... innocent creatures who can not protect themselves. Your company has the opportunity to do the right thing and restrict the opportunity for harm.... allowing shelters to advertise versus individuals who do not have an opportunity to do necessary screening on potential owners.

Cruelty to animals has to stop and stop now. No animal big or small should have to endure the cruelty that this sweet girl had to go thru. Just imagine what this pup went thru the torment and torture she went thru all to just have to be put to sleep because there was to much damage to her little body. Heart breaking this should never, ever happen to another animal again.. Please help us stop the violence against the ones that don't have a voice of their own. We need to be that voice.
