Jetstar: drop the $8.50 credit card surcharge on our airfares in line with the new Reserve Bank ruling!

These "booking and service fees" are ridiculous. Jetstar are the worst. They add on $8.50 per passenger per flight to pay by credit card -- hitting us with a huge surcharge for using the only real payment option they give us.

New reforms aiming to stop excessive credit card fees by major retailers are meant to be in effect -- the Reserve Bank rules now say only the "reasonable cost of card acceptance" should be charged by retailers. But the reforms frankly don't go far enough, and it looks like Jetstar are among the businesses looking for ways around complying.

Jetstar have the most expensive credit card surcharges or "service fees" for booking flights. What's worrying -- if they get away with not dropping the credit card fees, it could lead the way for other major retailers to do the same. Then we're back to square one. Just like how the Banks have ignored interest rate changes by the RBA to line their pockets!

Airlines and retailers like Caltex, Hilton hotels, Cabcharge, and many others are raking in millions of dollars from fees they add on to credit card transactions. At some point we've got to say enough is enough.

When did we start allowing for these extra credit card surcharges to be levied for our goods and services over and above the published prices? The price should be the price! In my view, ALL credit card surcharges should be removed.

Please sign my petition telling Jetstar CEO Jayne Hrdlicka that we're fed up with paying huge fees just for the luxury of paying them for our flights. They should lead the way by dropping their fees in line with the RBA recommendations!

Make sure you tell Jetstar via Facebook too: https://www.facebook.com/JetstarAustralia?filter=2

And Twitter: https://twitter.com/JetstarAirways

***Can you help me monitor if Jetstar and other major retailers like Caltex, Qantas, Hotels and others drop their surcharges? Let me know on nomorecreditcardsurcharges@gmail.com on Monday when the RBA rule is meant to take effect. Thanks!

I'm really disappointed in your decision to continue charging credit card surcharges that have even been labelled by the Reserve Bank as "excessive".

Please immediately drop your $8.50 per passenger per flight "booking and service" fee for paying by credit card. We won't put up with this any longer.

      Rest of the response:

Customers who choose to complete their booking via any other method will incur the following Booking and Service Fee (per passenger, per flight):

      - $8.50 AUD per passenger per flight for Australian domestic and short haul international services; and

      - $12.50 AUD per passenger per flight for long haul international services.

While Jetstar doesn’t have a credit card surcharge, we are aware of the new RBA standard applying to Card Schemes.

The next step is for card companies to publish their new policies based on the new guidelines.

Once this happens, we will determine whether we need to make changes. We expect this process to take some time.

Jetstar have just sent through a response to the petition:

"We know our customers like choice and that’s why we offer a number of options to complete a booking for Jetstar flights.
While Jetstar does have a Booking and Service fee, customers can avoid the fee by using one of four methods to complete their booking:

      - Direct payment (Direct Deposit) using online banking for bookings via Jetstar.com, made more than 14 days prior to departure;
      - POLi direct payments (a real time electronic funds transfer) for bookings via Jetstar.com, available for payments in Australian or New Zealand dollars. Flights do not need to be booked well in advance in order to pay with POLi
      - Jetstar MasterCard and Jetstar Platinum MasterCard
      - Jetstar voucher"

Payment by Credit Card is a standard method of payment today and should not be hidden or forced on consumers.
