Owners of Targeted Breed (breeds commonly discriminated against) are often faced with the daunting task of finding insurance products that will not deny them based on the breed of dog they love and own. Rescue, advocacy groups, and owners of these breeds have long supported Farmers and referred them to others due specifically to the fact that they did not deny insurance coverage to consumers based on the breed of dog that they own. We are saddened to see that this policy is soon to be changed and that owners of the American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, and Wolf Hybrids will now be denied coverage and have their pets excluded from current policies due to nothing more than the breed of their dogs.

Furthermore, insurance coverage for these breeds is often the determining factor in a potential adopter's decision making process or when a person is trying to rent with these breeds. Farmers new policy will cause more pets to languish in shelters and rescues and more renters to not be able to adopt and keep these dogs.

Hi Everyone, thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. We sincerely appreciate this opportunity to hopefully clarify a few things. To start, we found that in California, three breeds were accounting for a significant number of dog bite claims. We had two choices, we could either raise rates on all of our customers, which we try to avoid, or we could have customers that own those breeds sign an exclusion that says if their dog bites or injures somebody, that injury will not be covered. We are not cancelling anybody's policies based on the breed of their dog. We love dogs as much as anybody, truly. Those customers who own one of the breeds listed and who wish to keep some liability coverage for their dog, may still contact their Farmers agent to discuss options for securing dog liability coverage elsewhere. Thanks again for this opportunity to reply to your page. We appreciate it.

If this policy is implemented nationwide, I will change my homeowners insurance policy to a non-discriminatory company. I will advise all of my relatives who have farmers to do likewise. I chose Farmers insurance because I believed that they were more than just a bottom line business and had morals. If proven wrong, I will switch. This policy is based on misinformation of studies that have been questioned in scientific journals by well respected researchers.

I own 5 different breed of dogs that they are discriminating against. Pit bull/pit bull mix/Rottweiler/Doberman/German shepherd. 2 Of my dogs are 10-11yrs old, all of them are great dogs, I have never had a report from the police or dog warden for any of my dogs. I still had a really hard time finding homeowners insurance because of my dogs. I am on disability and the rate I have to pay takes most of my monthly check. I think its sad that they can get by with this, the problem is they know you have to have insurance on your home, so they can do what they want, its just not fair! I wouldn't give up any of my dogs, I consider them my children, and even thought about selling my home and buying a RV, then least I know my dogs would be safe, and just maybe I would have a little bit more cash to put back incase of emgencey, now I just live from month to month, $710 a month is really hard to live on, but the insurance companies don't care rather you have enough money to pay all your other bills, like gas, elec, water, car insurance and so on. They need to stop discriminating against these breeds, so many die each day because of it! Just isn't right!

Because I love dogs and all dogs will bite depending on the way they are raised and socialized, so discriminating certain breeds is wrong.
