AUGUST 2007

Baby Sunshine was 4 months old when her father Jimmy (Kyaw Min Yu) was arrested, following the pro-democracry street protests in Burma.

Sunshine's mother Nilar Thein was distraught.

Distraught about the fate awaiting Jimmy and distraught because she knew they would be after her next.  She knew she had to get away.

She also knew it was not safe to have her daughter with her.

Making the most painful decision of her life, she bade farewell to her baby, leaving her in the care of elderly grandparents and went into hiding.

Every day was a day of danger for Nilar Thein, as she constantly moved around, frightened to stay in one place for long.

Every day her painful breasts were a constant reminder that Sunshine was hungry for her milk.

Every day she yearned to go and visit Sunshine, knowing if she did so the security services would be waiting.

"How can I express my terrible feeling of missing my baby?" Nilar Thein said from her hiding place.

For over a year Nilar Thein stayed on the run.

Not in silence.

From her hiding places, she continued to appeal to the international community, urging action to resolve the grave human rights abuses women suffer under the military regime in Burma.

"Only if we end this bad system will the future of Burma's people, including my daughter's, be bright," she said.

"I love my daughter, but I also need to consider mothers fleeing with their children and hiding in jungles, such as in Karen State because of the civil war," said Nilar Thein.

"My suffering is very small compared to theirs".

SEPTEMBER 2008

When Sunshine was sixteen months old, Nilar Thein was arrested.

Three months later, she was sentenced to serve 65 years in prison.

Alone in their seperate prisons, Nilar Thein and Jimmy have seen little or nothing of baby Sunshine since that grim month of 2007.

Please help Nilar Thein and other mothers unjustly detained by the military regime of Burma (Myanmar) by signing this petition.
