In August 2010, Marissa Alexander defended herself from further violence by her abusive estranged husband in their home by firing a warning shot toward the ceiling. No one was injured by the shot fired to save her life. Without bond to care for her premature nursing daughter, in May 2012, Marissa was wrongly convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Under Florida’s mandatory minimum sentencing law, Marissa was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison. Marissa had a restraining order against the serial abuser, a legally licensed gun and permit, and no criminal history. Florida's “Stand Your Ground” law did not work for her in the way it worked for Trayvon Martin’s and Jordan Davis' killer which raises serious concerns of discrimination against Marissa. It appears that stereotypes about Black women project them as aggressors even when defending their lives upon deadly attack. Something has to be done regarding all women who defend themselves against their abusers. Too often they receive little understanding and sympathy from the systems charged with demonstrating justice.

GIVING MANY THANKS TODAY! Words cannot express the relief and joy from everyone working for the Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign. Marissa Alexander is free today on a $200,000 bond with conditions until a verdict is reached in her new trial beginning March 31, 2014.

Ms. Alexander will prepare for the new trial amid the support and love of her children and family. Campaign members are even more determined to help win complete exoneration for Marissa. In November, the Marissa Alexander Freedom Fund campaign launched to raise $10,000 has exceeded its goal. We intend to raise as much as possible toward the $250,000 trial costs with all supporters help. Petition signers can lead by sending a minimum of $5-$10 at tiny.cc/freedomfundraiser to help us reach this goal by April 1. Your small donation means so much.

As always, thanks for your support in every way. Pass the word.

    2. Marissa Alexader Granted New Trial But Still Incarcerated

Free Marissa Now, an alliance of lead organizers and thousands globally have been organizing for Marissa's freedom from prison. While Marissa's new trial is scheduled to begin March 31, 2014, State Attorney Angela Corey refuses to drop the case against Marissa Alexander, continuing a pattern of unjust targeting and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the mobilization campaign and movement maintains attention on supporting Marissa, her family, the legal team in winning her freedom, and the Marissa Freedom Fundraiser for legal fees not covered by pro bono legal services. All proceeds go to the Marissa Alexander Legal Defense Fund which is administered by Marissa's family on her behalf. See more information at this link: www.freemarissanow.tumblr.com

Marissa's supporters are the greatest, showing up every step of the way, to give deep support and love. Thanks in advance for your donation and other actions to help free Marissa.

100% injustice. How can Zimmerman murder an unarmed innocent teenager and Ms. Alexander be found guilty for shooting a wall? Too much hate!!!
