National CTU Solidarity Pledge: We've got your back!

To the Chicago Teachers Union Leaders and Members

We were outraged to learn that Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called for a court injunction to end your strike. We know that massive national support is needed to beat back this attack and win this inspirational struggle in defense of public education. We pledge that should you decide on Tuesday, Sept. 18 to continue your strike, we will immediately organize mass mobilizations -- up to and including walkouts, occupations, and job actions -- in solidarity with your struggle. We call on all labor, student, and community organizations to sign this pledge and mobilize accordingly. An injury to one is an injury to all!

Teachers' working conditions are students' learning conditions. Public education is the heart of this country. Let's keep it beating strong by supporting teachers and students!

As a teacher myself, I understand how the attacks on education hurt us, our students, and our communities. The continuous devaluing of our work is devastating and demoralizing. Now-more than ever- teachers have to unite and say: ENOUGH! We deserve RESPECT! And our students deserve a QUALITY EDUCATION.

I am so totally upset with the educational focus on tests and other state mandates, increased class size and the overwhelming anti-union sentiment growing, not simply towards the teachers' unions but all unions. It's disgusting!

Public education is essential for social health. Expanding classes sizes and closing or under-resourcing schools is unjust. I support CPS teachers in their struggle for better education for their students.

I'm a parent. Was a teacher. Sat on my school board for 14 years. This is the tip of the iceberg of attempts at a corporate takeover of the country. I'm concerned and mad as hell.
