Clear Channel: Issue Formal Apology For Radio Hosts Who Advocated Murdering Trans People

    1. Petition by

      Gender Justice League

Update- GLAAD has announced that Lex & Terry will be making a formal appology and working with the LGBT media advocacy organization to find a "way to meaningfully address the issue of anti-transgender violence on the air"

Clear Channel has yet to formally respond.

Sirius satellite radio, founded by out transwoman Martine Rothblatt, bought XM satellite radio in 2008 and is now known as SiriusXM. The SiriusXM talk show, Lex and Terry came out in support of murdering trans people in a cases of gay/trans-panic. On Friday (06/03/2013), the Lex and Terry show began discussing this issue saying, There’s a teen that shot a tranny after finding out that it was a man after they had a little sexual encounter. A co-host responded, I don’t blame him. I would have shot his ass too.

SiriusXM has already issued this statement regarding this issue and Clear Channels responsibility-

We apologize for this programming and don’t in any way condone it. The Extreme Talk channel and the Lex and Terry show are programming providing to us by Clear Channel. The channel and all the shows on it are under the control of Clear Channel. We are required to carry the channel based on pre-existing agreement with Clear Channel. We have made Clear Channel aware of this issue and the complaints from listeners.

Please consider the effect that widespread anti trans sentiment and transphobia has on the world today.-

-41 percent of transgender people attempt suicide

-Transgender youth account for 18 per cent of homeless people in cities such as Chicago, but researchers estimate fewer than 1 in 1,000 people identifies as transgender.

-New figures from Trans Murder Monitoring show 265 trans people were murdered across the world in the last 12 months,

-In the US alone Transgender women comprised 40% of the 30 reported hate murders in 2011, while representing only 10% of total violence survivors and victims. This was comparable to last year’s report where transgender women comprised 44% of the 27 reported hate murders, reflecting a two-year trend toward disproportional and severe violence faced by transgender women.

-53.8% of anti-LGBTQ homicide victims in 2012 were transgender women. This is a considerable increase from 2011 (40%) and continues a three-year trend toward disproportionate and severe violence experienced by transgender women.

-Transgender youth whose parents pressure them to conform to their anatomical gender report higher levels of depression, illegal drug use, suicide attempts and unsafe sex than peers who receive little or no pressure from parents.

The media is deeply complicit in spreading and approving transphobic sentiments,

We call on Clear Channel to follow standard journalistic broadcast requirements to treat all murder victims with respect and dignity and to require that Lex and Terry engage directly with GLAAD to become trained on Transgender issues.

Statistics on trans suicide and homelessness have been pulled from the National Trans Discrimination Survey.

Discrimination, is a form of bigotry and intolerance. I will be damned if someone thinks it's somehow elevating to be confined to a binder because of prejudices

Didn't Lex and Terry see "The Fisher King", where a shock jock said yuppies needed to be shot--and then a guy went into a bar and shot people? Do they want to take responsibility for people's deaths due to their callous and insensitive comments?
