UPDATE: Unfortunately we weren't able to stop Channel 4 from broadcasting Benefits Street, the final episode aired but I am proud of what we achieved with this petition. We opened a huge debate about how people using benefits are portrayed in the media. I'll be keeping the petition open. I believe that we should continue to protest any news that humiliates or paints a negative picture of the disabled, sick and the vulnerable in society.

______________________

On Monday Channel 4 broadcast a programme called Benefits Street. The program tried to show that 90% of people living on the street are on benefits of some sort. Within minutes people took to Facebook and Twitter with comments like "I'd go down this street with a baseball bat".

Having lived in Birmingham, not far from where the program was made, I can honestly say this show is not representative of people in the area.

Benefits Street has portrayed people on benefits as scroungers and it’s wrong. I have worked for 23 years but after major surgery am now unable to work and receive some benefits. The backlash and abuse of social networks towards people on benefits as a result of this show has shocked me.

Channel 4 should not broadcast any further episodes of the program -- it is creating a skewed image of a section of society and stirring up hatred. This is not a responsible approach from a public service broadcaster.

The series is set to run for four more episodes. Please support me in calling on Channel 4 to stop any further episodes of this horrible program being broadcast and make a donation to a relevant charity for the harm done.

Why must the disabled, the sick and the elderly be alienated for receiving benefits that they actually need while those higher up the social ladder are practically worshipped even though they are guilty of the same crime? Please, Channel 4, just end this. It's unjust, disgusting and horrifying that we live in a society that uses the most vulnerable minorities as scapegoats for problems. This needs to stop, and the first step in achieving this is by ending this filth once and for all.

Benefits Street paints a negative picture of the disabled, sick and the most vulnerable within society. Although it is well known that the topic of benefits is controversial, it is not fair by any means to create such a negative and stereotyped image of these vulnerable people. Granted there are people within the UK that abuse their rights of benefits but these people are benefit frauds and there is a clear difference between frauds and individuals that desperately need and depend upon the benefits they receive. To anyone that watches Benefits Street, please take a look into the possible circumstances of a person before making an instant judgement of them. And maybe you should be thankful that you don't live like them, because they certainly don't all have it easy.

This is important too me because every single programme I see on TV in relation to benefits is people who are abusing the system and getting all they can get when they don't need it but you never seem to see the actual hard off people who cannot afford to live on the money they receive it is false media making out that all people that are on benefits are scroungers which is completely not the case, of course there are some out there who do abuse the system but it is not right that the honest people suffer just so that the government can justify all the cuts they have made and are planning to make in the future.
