Boycott Rapp Malaysia for their GE13 fear-mongering ads

You would have seen the fear-mongering ads from Barisan Nasional (BN) in the mainstream media.

The print advertisements play on Chinese fears of PAS’ Islamist influence on the one hand, and Malay fears of DAP influence on the other, with the slogan: “A vote for DAP is a vote for PAS,” and vice versa.

“The ads look like they are designed to cause anxiety and fear that the Chinese would lose their culture and education if they vote for DAP,” Masjaliza Hamzah, from the Centre of Independent Journalism (CIJ), told The Malaysian Insider.

“There’s zero concept. Just accusations with no tact or respect. The ads are very patronising, an insult to the people’s intelligence,” said 32-year-old copywriter Kevin, who declined to give his last name. “They forgot the golden rule of advertising. No advertising can save a bad product,” he added.

These racial fear campaigns are the biggest insult to the intelligence of today's voters. It reflects the mentality and quality of the BN leaders.

It has been exposed by Campaign Asia-Pacific that Rapp Malaysia is responsible for these advertisements. Rapp Malaysia is a part of Naga DDB Malaysia.

Let’s ensure the clients from Rapp Malaysia and Naga DDB are aware of their agency's irresponsible and fear-mongering ads for Barisan Nasional.

Your agency RAPP Malaysia (and its parent company NAGA DDB Malaysia) has been producing fear-mongering and patronising ads for BN.

Malaysians deserve more and these ads are truly an insult to the people's intelligence. Stop using racial and religious tactics against Malaysians.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

So Rapp's COO is not responding. Why are we not surprised?

As to the notion by David Mitchell, Naga's COO, that the Naga DDB is a separate company from Rapp Malaysia, you only need to know that Datuk Vincent Lee owns both Naga DDB and Rapp Malaysia AND is the deputy chairman for Star Publications!

Talk about everything being in one big family.

"The petition also urged Naga DDB, the parent of Rapp to stop the ad campaign. David Mitchell, Naga DDB’s Chief operating officer (COO) however told KiniBiz that Rapp was a separate company from Naga DDB, related only by their common parent Foetus International.

Lim Wai Yee, Rapp’s COO did not respond to queries at publication time.

Rapp KL is owned by Foetus International, a leading communications company headed by Vincent Lee. Lee is also the executive deputy chairman of Star Publications (M) Bhd."

I stopped subscribing to Star. Will not listen to RedFM. Will not buy anymore other publications by Star. Bring in all "celebrity" columnist, bring in all celebrity DJ's. This won't make a difference to the perception that the English speaking masses have on these two organisation now that they have stooped so low as to allow these ads to be published. Funnily, a friend told me this; front page Star - Dream Cabinet. On the same day, Breakfast show on RedFM talks about dream cabinets too, but not parliamentary cabinet but kitchen cabinets!
