Allytra Perryman: Thank you for your support. Thanks to you we have proven to the Biloxi School district that we care about our children. However, the battle continues. The legal battle is underway and our community organizing efforts are ramping up. Please join us Saturday, October 27th at John Henry Beck Park in Biloxi, MS at 10am. We will distribute free SOS t-shirts, SOS car decals and SOS yard signs to all of our supporters. We want to make sure Biloxi leaders feel our presence in the community. Immediately following the rally we march from Beck Park to Nichols Elementary. We need your continued support! Join us facebook: SOSnichols Follow us on twitter: SOSnichols

Nichols Elementary School in East Biloxi, Mississippi was simply the best. Not just the highest performing school in the Biloxi public school system, but a star school—the highest rating in the state. In 2010, Nichols won a national Blue Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education, one of only four schools in the state to get this honor. That same year, Nichols produced Mississippi’s teacher of the year and the Biloxi parent of the year.

All of these achievements are especially notable given that Nichols served an African-American and Vietnamese community with one of the highest poverty levels in Mississippi. Everyone was proud of Nichols. So imagine the surprise when Biloxi residents learned in April 2010 that the school board was closing this award-winning school. Board members made this decision with no outreach to parents, the community or to African-American educational leaders in Biloxi.

Since then, parents, students and community advocates have been working to re-open Nichols and return neighborhood kids to the small class sizes and state-of-the-art facility that was rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina. Sign this petition to show your support for Mississippi’s school kids.
