BILL THROOP & KENNETH MULDER: Release Bill and Lou to Vine Sanctuary!

Bill and Lou are 2 oxens who have been a working team of oxen at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont for 10 years. They were pressed into service by Cerridwen Farm (the teaching farm on campus) to do everything from plowing fields to generating electricity.

A few months ago, Lou became unable to be worked any longer; Bill won't work with anyone else. Therefore, the college has concluded that both of them must be killed.

DEATH is their reward for 10 LONG YEARS of hard work for humans.

Yes, Green Mountain College has decided that Bill and Lou's long lives of service for humans should be rewarded by their slaughter - and for what? According to their own press releases, the school will get, at best, a couple of months of low-grade hamburger out of their bodies.

All of this is especially heartbreaking because Bill & Lou have an excellent home waiting for them at Vine Sanctuary, which has also offered to arrange transport and veterinary care for both Bill & Lou. Sadly, though, the college is determined to kill them instead.

Bill & Lou gave their best years to humans; for 10 years, they served the needs of humans. Now, it's time to let them serve their own needs. Please sign this petition and tell BILL THROOP and KENNETH MULDER of GREEN MOUNTAIN COLLEGE to release Bill & Lou to Vine Sanctuary.

Although they were scheduled to be killed a couple of days ago, Bill and Lou are STILL alive. Please read the note below and take action NOW. Time is of the essence. Thank you!

"The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is taking note of EVERY call they receive about Bill and Lou (the two oxen at Green Mountain College) and are registering how many people are calling to express their concern about this matter SO PLEASE CALL THEM NOW: 802-828-1619. They ARE taking notes of every call they receive about Bill and Lou; they're not taking the calls lightly. The lady, who answers the phone, Faith, is a VERY, VERY polite lady so please call now and leave a POLITE message to save Bill and Lou. Tell her that GMC was offered about $50,000 to $100,000 to purchase the two oxen and a FREE sanctuary (VINE sanctuary) at NO expense to the college, and the college still declined the offers."

In light of allegations made in response to our open letter to parents, we think that students and parents should see this past letter to the college President, which was emailed on 12 October and sent by post to the college a couple of days later.

By now, you have probably heard about the controversy concerning the impending slaughter of de facto campus mascots, Bill and Lou, 11 year-old oxen who have been denied the chance to live out their retirement at a sanctuary.

Green Mountain College has posted an evidently official refusal to reconsider the decision to slaughter Bill and Lou on its Facebook page. We could-and probably will-go line by line, pointing out the inconsistencies and inaccuracies.

by Cheryl Wylie I grew up on a beef farm. The herd was small, only about a dozen or so cows and one bull that I could virtually walk under as a child. I often watched them throughout the summers and sat in the pasture with them any time that I could.

My goodness. What I see immediately is that the contradiction of these arguments trumpets some strenuous rationalization. Which is the case? Will Bill and Lou continue to eat and drink the planet out from under us, or will they simply be put to death by the VINE Sanctuary?

Green Mountain College is saying that they would be doing Bill & Lou a favor by killing them. They are literally saying that "it is kinder to kill them than to send them off to a sanctuary." They also claim that keeping them alive would hurt the environment because they weigh a ton and eat a lot. Please note these animals mainly eat grass. Two oxen facing slaughter

Two oxen are about to be slaughtered at a college in Vermont. According to HLN affiliate WCAX: "Because it is an educational, sustainable farm, we think we've got to help students understand how to make farms work ecologically, socially and economically," said Bill Throop, the provost at Green Mountain College.

VPR News: In Vermont, Outcry Over Oxen

A Facebook petition asking Green Mountain College to spare the school's beloved oxen team from slaughter has racked up more than 30,000 signatures from all over the world. But school officials say they won't change their mind. They say using the oxen to feed students has generated a powerful dialog about meat, where it comes from and how it's raised.

There is no reason to kill these beautiful animals. Please let them go to a sanctuary. Show your appreciation for doing what they have for you as long as they were able. Remember, God is watching you & so is the rest of the world. Please do the right thing & let them rest the way their life was supposed to have been intended in the first place. Have a heart & be smart.
