Ban horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia!

In light of the most recent horse-drawn carriage accident in Philadelphia that left both horse and driver injured, Peace Advocacy Network (PAN) is strengthening its call for a ban on horse-drawn carriages. PAN welcomes the public to join them to send a message that we will not tolerate the cruel, dangerous, and harmful practice that puts tourists, residents, drivers, and horses at such an imminent risk of serious injuries.

The ban already has support from area businesses, their employees, and animal advocacy and rescue groups who have signed onto PAN’s open letter to Philadelphia City Council. PAN’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Legislative Director, Brandon Gittelman, has stated, “It is time to ban the cruel horse-drawn carriage industry, and this accident in Philadelphia is just another example of the danger in mixing horses with city traffic.”

ABOUT PEACE ADVOCACY NETWORK Peace Advocacy Network (PAN) is a grassroots group completely run by volunteers. PAN strives for the absence of violence in the lives of people and animals. Campaigns include vegan advocacy, humane facts education, horse-drawn carriage ban, LGBTQ issues, and human rights issues.

    1. WE REACHED OUR GOAL!!!

In less than one week, we reached our goal of over 1,000 people support this ban on horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia! We hope that with the more than 1,000 emails Mark Squilla has received, that he'll truly consider sponsoring our draft legislation in support of the ban. We are awaiting his response at the moment and will keep you posted as soon as we hear anything.

While going through the signatures, it appears many of you are not only from Philadelphia, but live in the Squilla's first district, like myself. Well, tomorrow, we will be holding a rally in support of a ban on the carriages and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please attend the rally tomorrow, for any amount of time you can. We really need to send a strong message with a large crowd of people! It's from 12-2 on 6th between Market and Chestnut. All details can be found here: http://www.peaceadvocacynetwork.org/events/HDC07222012.shtml

    3. Great job guys, let's keep it up! Also, did you see this piece? Ugh!

Thanks to all of you who have gotten us nearly 25% of the way to our 1,000 signature goal in just over 12 hours! AMAZING WORK! This is not one of those online petitions that have no bearing in the real world. For everyone that signs, a letter is sent to our district representative and city mayor. We already have the draft legislation, but we need the district representative to sponsor it.

Please, please, please, share this far and wide and help us get as many signatures as possible! We can make this ban happen, but we need to get the word out and need the representative and mayor to know people DO agree with us on the ban! Share this on Facebook, Twitter, email, etc. If we got over 200 signatures in less than 24 hours, imagine how many we can get in the next few days!

Lastly, check out this opinion piece from Philly.com. We were basically belittled for calling for the ban and the author took a strong, albeit misguided, pro-carriage position. Please leave your comments there!

It is a travesty to see horses in HOT & HUMID weather pulling FAT tourists around the city. I watched a driver whipping a horse a few weeks ago on Spruce Street to get that beautiful animal past the yellow light. I went crazy on him. They are supposed to bring these horses in at 90-91 degrees F and they DO NOT. The owners of these carriage company's should be put in jail for animal abuse.

Horse drawn carriages should be banned, because we're not in the 1800's any more. It's cruel to do this to horses in extreme heat.
