Is every voice, experience and discipline valued in Australian universities?

Gender, Women's, Queer, Sexuality and Diversity studies give a voices to groups who have been silenced by history. Yet they are the first subject areas to be hung out to dry by Australian tertiary institutions.

After more than 40 years, the University of Queensland is set to discontinue the Gender Studies major as of 2013. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence; it was also cut in 2012 at La Trobe University and in 2008 at the University of Melbourne (in 2013 it has been re-introduced at Melbourne due to demand).

Through these cuts, what message is being sent to young people and the value of every voice in society? The struggle for equality is not a myth but it will fast become one unless we stand, defend and fight for these vital disciplines.

Universities Australia & TEQSA must introduce standards and adopt platforms, which directly relate to the range of voices and subjects being taught in universities.

We demand a diversity of choice, a diversity of voices and herstory to be taught. We demand the preservation of gender, queer, sexuality and diversity subjects and reinstated where it has been cancelled. Studies of gender and diversity have a necessary place in any comprehensive tertiary institution.

Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, "She doesn't have what it takes." They will say, "Women don't have what it takes." ~Clare Boothe Luce

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute. ~Rebecca West, "Mr Chesterton in Hysterics: A Study in Prejudice," The Clarion, 14 Nov 1913, reprinted in The Young Rebecca, 1982

Women have been taught that, for us, the earth is flat, and that if we venture out, we will fall off the edge. ~Andrea Dworkin

The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, "It's a girl." ~Shirley Chisholm

'Gender' is the sex-role stereotyping used to oppress girls and women. Ending study of this aids the invisibilisation of our oppression.

I have had my GSDS major cut at La Trobe University and I think it so poor that this incredible area of study is being shrunk all over Australia, where it should be blooming and expanding the critical minds of university students!

I want the story of women to be told even after we have become equal. We are still unequal and have a long way to go. We may have more freedom but there are still other women who have not.
