Repeal the $100K Pit Bull Insurance Ordinance

Pit Bulls are being removed from their loving homes and given 5 days before euthanizing for owners to comply with a city ordinance to maintain $100K in insurance against posssible pitbull damage or attacks. This ordinance implies ALL Pit Bulls are a threat to the safety of people. This is false! The dogs are born innocent and raised to their current behaviors by their owners. The acts of a few neglegent owners should not financially impact the majority of responsible pet owners. It should also not give Animal Control the right to remove a healthy well taken care of animal from it's home.  Let your local lawmakers know that your tax dollars are better spent controling actual criminal activity, not trying to prevent a minority chance of a potential safety hazzard.  Sign this petition to show your support AGAINST this ordinance.

Please provide any update on the situation at hand. Has Town Council agreed to revisit the ordinance, or are they sinking in their heels despite the negative attention? Have the dogs been moved to a NKS?

    6. UPDATE: Washington, LA Councilwoman Wilson: Making an Effort to Save Lives

      Brian Schauer
      Petition Organizer

In a follow up by KATC, the letter mentioned in a previous article releasing dogs to one owner was for the Pit Bulls of Mona Wilson herself. We need to demand a response from Council members for this act from one of their own. Why weren't all the dog owners affected given the same opportunity to take their pets out of the area to avoid euthanizing?

While the online movement has yielded results quicker than I imagined, there are still a lot of people out there that aren't aware that Breed Specific Legislation like this exists, or even if it's in effect in their town. The link below is a print out to spread awareness of the Washington, LA issue in your area.

As you ask for peoples time and consideration, remind them to check their City Council's agenda often for proposed BSL. The best way to stop these laws are to be at the Town Hall meetings to object their proposal.

    9. A Word on Communicating to Officals

      Brian Schauer
      Petition Organizer

As we continue to gain exposure through online and social media outlets I would like to remind everyone to please to be respectful of the officials in the Parish of St. Landry including Council Members, Police, and Animal Control. I have and will continue to run a clean campaign against the ordinance, as that is the target, and not the personal characters of those who enforce it. Law Enforcement, in support of the ordinance or not, have a duty to enforce the codes of its jurisdiction. However unjust we feel that dogs were removed from their life homes I can't imagine this was what Police and AC were hoping to do that day. It’s my understanding that the Chief of Police may also be a dog owner.

Although it is your choice how you express your anger toward breed specific legislation; I’m asking everyone to use restraint in your communications. For your reference, the link below is the current ordinance (Sec 5-83) for St. Landry’s Parish.

      Thank you for your support.

Pleas were sent today to 3 local news channels to provide further awareness of the petition. Today is the 5th day since the 17 Pit Bulls were removed from their homes on Monday. Potentially any of them still at the shelter could be euthanized as early as today (per Police Chief Broussard). It's extremely important that everyone make a communication directly to town hall asking to repeal the ordinance and bring the dogs home. Give them the message they can't ignore, this will not be tolerated

    15. Parish's Animal Control Supervisor - has no intention of euthanizing

      Brian Schauer
      Petition Organizer

The St. Landry Parish Animal Control is working with the owners of the seized Pit Bulls through compliance of the ordinance on Monday. At this time they are stating there is no intention of euthanizing. Other reports from the Washington Police Chief Ronelle Broussard states the dogs are being given 5 days from seizure before euthanization. While it is up to animal control shelter when the dogs will be put on the kill list, this only delays the affects of the ordiance.

I own a pitbull and so does other members of my family. They are the sweeetest most affectionate, loyal dogs I've ever met. It comes down to how they’re raised. Every dog bites if it’s not trained properly.

All dogs can bite, the breed or the lack of breed does not matter, No one should be able to walk onto someones property and take want those people are theives and they were trespassing on top of that. Where are the laws for that Oh thats right we have those. Maybe someone should look into that.
