Abandon the Skykomish River / Sunset Falls Hydro Project

To:  Snohomish County Public Utility Commissioners Kathleen VaughnToni Olson and David Aldrich

Help send a clear message to Washington State officials:   Save the Skykomish River!

Despite widespread opposition, a Washington State power company SnoPUD has proposed building a new dam and power plant on the protected Skykomish River.  This environmental catastrophe would partially dewater over a mile of river, including two pristine waterfalls, Canyon Falls and Sunset Falls.

SnoPUD’s proposed damis a $150 million boondoggle that would produce minimal energy – less than 1% of their energy portfolio - while posing serious risks to our environment,  recreation opportunities, and quality of life.

At present, taxpayers are spending $324.7 MILLION to remove two Washington State dams on the Elwha River.

This targeted area, the South Fork of the Skykomish River, is one of only four Scenic Rivers designated for protection by the Washington State Legislature.  In addition, this area has also been nominated to Congress for Federal Protection by the U.S Forest Service for its Outstanding Remarkable Values, which would be destroyed by this project.

Sunset Falls is in a Northwest Power and Conservation Council Protected Area from hydropower development because “such development would have major negative impacts that could not be reversed.”

Vigorously opposed are:

  • The Sierra Club
  • American Rivers
  • American Whitewater
  • The Hydropower Reform Coalition
  • The Alpine Lakes Protection Society
  • The North Cascades Conservation Council
  • The Mountaineers
  • Washington Wild
  • Washington residents and ratepayers

The Skykomish River is home to ESA threatened Chinook (King) salmon as well as bull trout, river otters, wild salmon, steelhead and other fish and wildlife, aquatic birds, raptors, and amphibians. The Skykomish River is one of the few remaining rivers in Washington State without a dam!

The Northwest Power and Conservation Council received 410 comments from concerned citizens who oppose making exemptions on protected rivers for hydro power dams. The NWPCC can bar the ill conceived damming of the Sky river and these comments have sent a very powerful message. ACTION ALERT:

Comments are due no later than September 17, 2013 to the NWPCC (Northwest Power and Conservation Council), urging them NOT to allow self-interested utility companies or other developers to weaken the program in the NWPCC on "Fish and Wildlife Protections." The Sno. PUD wants an exception to the NWPCC Plan that prohibits dams of any kind on fish-bearing rivers and streams in their region

      Sample Comment:

"No changes or exceptions to NWPCC Protected Areas - especially the South Fork Skykomish River. Keep it protected!"

Thank you for joining the growing community calling for protection of the Skykomish River against SnoPUD hydro development. On May 15, The Skykomish River was named one of America's top ten "Most Endangered Rivers" by the nations leading river authority - Washington DC based American Rivers.

Now please take one more quick and easy step to help protect this priceless natural treasure:

PLEASE FORWARD THIS E-MAIL to your friends, neighbors and family members and ask them to join you by signing the online petition at savetheskyriver.org and to then forward this e-mail to their friends and family as well.

Although we are ONLY ordinary citizens, and SnoPUD is a multi billion dollar corporate Goliath, we can stop this project with enough public opposition. SnoPUD has stated publicly on many occasions that: ”we will not force this project on anyone.” So every vote on the petition is critical. Let’s tell SnoPUD “NO” to damming one of our last remaining wild and scenic rivers.

This is one of the most amazing and beautiful sections of the Skykomish. The plan to add a dam or other hydropower is horrendous.

I am 55 years old and since I was 18 years old the Skykomish river has been my escape and oasis to a beautiful wild place. Fishing, Camping or just a drive for the day. Nothing can beat it. Please do not change what god has made. Places like the Skykomish River are getting to be a rare place to find. Much more would be lost than what may be perceived to gain. Leave it alone.

The dam project is not worth the environmental costs.

Full time fishing guide. I have a home on the Skykomish river and guide fishing and sightseeing trips, I would hate to see the river dammed on one of the most scenic, bio diverse , and important spawning areas destroyed.

This will ruin the river on which many people live year round. It is an unnecessary project, and destructive to the environment along the river.
