This past spring, Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash introduced Bill C-232, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (cruelty to animals).This bill would remove animal cruelty crimes from the property section of the Criminal Code, recognizing animals as beings that can feel pain.

1. Animals are sentient beings, capable of feeling pain, and are not property;
2.Stray and wild animals are not sufficiently protected by animal cruelty laws under the property section of the Criminal code of Canada.
3. It is imperative that those who abuse animals face conviction and significant penalty;
4. Loopholes in existing legislation too often allow those who abuse animals to escape penalty;

Thanks to all who joined us and circulated the petition. While my bill works its way through the House, the government can act NOW to modernize our laws and protect animals from the types of heinous abuse we hear about all too often."

      “At a time when more and more Canadians are feeling left out of the political process, it is encouraging that MPs from all parties put aside partisan differences and agreed to improve grassroots democracy. My motion passed today represents an important first step towards modernizing our longstanding practice of citizens petitioning their government.
      My motion also proposes that short debates be triggered in Parliament in cases where a petition receives a significant number of signatures a
      significant number of signatures and is sponsored by at least five MPs. Not only would Canadians be able to easily express themselves by signing petitions online, their views and concerns could then be directly addressed by Members of Parliament. New Democrats are committed to empowering everyday Canadians to set the political agenda in Ottawa."

      This horrific story of animal abuse in Calgary is heartbreaking, but I see it as a call to action. Let's bring Canada's animal cruelty laws into the 21st century and ensure those who torture and abuse animals can no longer escape penalty. Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to present a petition signed by people from Gatineau and Ottawa in support of Bill C-232, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (cruelty to animals), moved by the hon. member for Parkdale—High Park.

      This bill would repeal the existing provisions of the Criminal code relating to animal cruelty, which are found in the part of the Criminal Code dealing with property, in recognition that animals can also feel pain.

      These amendments would provide more protection for wild or stray animals than is possible under the current legislation. They would also help to close the loopholes that too often allow those who mistreat animals to escape punishment.

      Thank you so much for your support on this bill.
      Please write your MPs and express your interest in this bill and other important bills like C-322, and also write them telling them you stand with Preston Manning, Ed Broadbent,and Kennedy Stewart on a motion to accept on-line petitions. And if there are enough like-minded citizens prepared to join the campaign – say, 50,000 – they could even force a House of Commons debate on the matter.

      B.C. NDP MP wants Commons to accept online petitions

      OTTAWA - Every day, a handful of MPs in the House of Commons put aside their BlackBerrys and stand up to table petitions - pieces of paper with actual signatures - demanding action from government on particular issues. It's an archaic and barely-noticed ritual, dating to the origins of British parliamentary tradition, that B.C.

      People need to pay for their crimes and be shown that their ARE repercussions for their actions! I wouldn't want them to keep killing and abusing. Next thing you know, we'll hear about a known animal abuser (instead of convicted and put away) dismembering children, lighting them on fire, stabbing them, all sorts of nasty things. I want prevention and justice.

      The same laws that apply to bullying or abusing children should apply to doing the same to our animal friends, who are like babes in our arms.
