Pass House Bill 1706 to protect breastfeeding mothers in Texas.

Public breastfeeding is protected by Texas state law, but breastfeeding mothers suffer harassment and eviction from public spaces due to ignorance and lack of enforcement mechanisms. HB 1706 strengthens existing state laws by providing education for business owners and provides redress for mothers whose rights have been violated. The bill would also instruct Texas state agencies to develop mother-friendly policies for breastfeeding employees.

Breastfeeding is a public good and health imperative. Breast milk is the optimal source of nutrition for babies and breastfeeding lowers a child’s risk of developing a wide range of diseases including obesity and diabetes later in life.

Supporting breastfeeding in the workplace is key to increasing breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity . Mother-friendly worksite policies at state agencies could result in huge healthcare savings.

While many federal agencies have recognized maternity care and breastfeeding as a key national strategy for improving the health of mothers and children, the promotion and creation of breastfeeding-friendly environments has been slow to be rolled out across the country.

Texas House Bill 1706 is an example of a concrete policy action that can be taken to support a mother’s right to breastfeed her child, particularly while working at a state agency.

Breastfeeding has so many benefits and should be accessible for all mothers, even if they choose to or need to work outside the home. Often when the right to feed your baby anywhere you want to is violated it is due to ignorance and people own personal squeamishness, which I feel is unacceptable.

I am a breastfeeding mother. We shouldn't be harrassed or made to feel ashamed for feeding our child in public. A mother should feed on demand, not when it's convenient for her or anybody else. And we shouldn't be required to cover up! Some babies don't like it....mine doesn't.

I breastfed both my children and I truly believe it made them healthier and happier. I support a woman's right to breastfed in public 100%!
