Mandate recycling programs in all Hawaii Island Public Schools.

For the past three years, students at Kealakehe High School have worked to establish an effective recycling program for their school. The program started with a few dedicated students and some recycling bins scattered around campus. Now, Kealakehe has two permanent recycling stations on campus and bins in each building. The entire school gets involved in the effort with bins in their classrooms and a weekly recycling drop off. However, having the bins on campus conflicts with the DOE waste contracts. The current contracts make no provisions for recycling and make it difficult for every public school to recycle. The amount of recyclable material that goes straight to the landfill each year, from schools alone, is disturbing. The Environmental Leadership Club believes that the establishment of a formal sustainable program will provide effective implementation of recycling for all schools of Hawai’i Island.

As some whose family lives in Hawaii i recognize the limited resources that Hawaii has inthe way of landfill space. Recycling in Hawaii still appears to be behind compared to many other states even though it is clearly more crucial to Hawaii's future, especially considering that keeping Hawaii beautiful is so key to it's economy.

Everyone should recycle, especially schools and other government institutions! How can we teach our kids to recycle when the schools don't even pitch in?

The schools in Hawaii are being wasteful and this demonstrates a lack of support for community efforts to recycle, lack of understanding of sustainable living initiatives in the state, and lack of awareness of the importance of the environment. Hawaii's schools need to set a positive example for the young people its trying to educate. How can I ask my students to read and write about real issues like renewable energy and environmental protections and then toss our wasted white paper and bottles in the trash in the classroom at the same time?
