Canadian Scientists don't need gatekeepers. Controlling their activities and communications is wrong. These policies are damaging to our nation, our people and our reputation in the world.

To:
The "Harper Government"
Stop muzzling Canadian scientists.

Sincerely,

    1. Good news today....

      I want to keep this petition open until the Information Commissioner completes her investigation and/or we see a policy change in the PM's office. Meanwhile, there is good news about the Experimental Lakes Area;

    2. BBC coverage making the rounds on Facebook

      Here's an excerpt from the BBC article making the rounds thru the Idle No More page;

      The Canadian government has repeatedly denied allegations of muzzling rather a strict application of a "media protocol" set out by the governing Conservatives, shortly after their election in 2008.

      The aim of the protocol, according to a leaked internal document, is to ensure that all messages from scientists are along "approved lines". The government's stated protocol is that ministers and senior civil servants should not be "surprised" by what they read in the newspapers.

      I just discovered and article announcing that Canada's Information Commissioner is going to investigate the muzzling of Canadian Scientists.

    4. Search 'Experimental Lakes' on this site.....

      ....and you will find 5 petitions to sign! That says to me that people are really ticked off about this issue. I signed another one this morning to stop muzzling archivists and librarians. I'm sending updates to leaders of the opposition in parliament. Share, share, share!

    5. Write a letter to the editor of your favourite newspaper.....

      Heather O'Meara
      Petition Organizer

      Here's an excerpt from the letter I sent to the Globe and Mail today:
      "Closing the Experimental Lakes Area is such an incredibly bad idea that there may be something else behind it. Isn't anybody out there following the money? Who are the contractors that will happily decommission the facility for an estimated $20-50 million dollars? How could anyone think that is a better use of tax dollars than the paltry amount required to keep it open? What minerals are buried under those pristine lakes, and what mining companies want them? What tour operators want to lift the restrictions on bringing high-paying anglers up from the States? If it turns out that some Harper campaign contributor benefits from the closure of the ELA, criminal charges might be warranted."

    6. I got a response from the PMO:

      "Please know that your e-mail message has been received in the Prime Minister's Office and that your comments have been noted. Our office always welcomes hearing from correspondents and being made aware of their views.

      Thank you for writing."

      woo- freakin' -hoo

    7. Something smells fishy, so I sent this to CBC, CTV, HuffPost, etc

      It would be easy to divert enough money from the “Canada’s Economic Action Plan” propaganda campaign to save the Experimental Lakes Area in northern Ontario, but the Harper government refuses to do so.
      What happens to the land once those pesky scientists are gone? What mineral resources are under those lakes and who has claims on them? Which federal politicians are receiving campaign contributions from mining corporations? Which Fisheries & Oceans public servants are going to end up with cushy jobs in said mining corporations?
      Would someone please follow the money and tell Canadians where it leads?

    9. Ask your representatives a question....

      Heather O'Meara
      Petition Organizer

      I just emailed the PMO and copied by MP (NDP) to ask how many signatures I would need to collect on a petition in order to divert enough funds from their "Canada's Economic Action Plan" propoganda campaign to keep the Experimental Lakes Area open. See Rick Mercer's rants on both topics for some perspective on the numbers.

      This is important to me because the Health Canada Library being closed down is absolutely ridiculous.

      This is important to me because I believe that Stephen Harper and his "government employees" have absolutely no regard for our environment and the safety of the citizens of Canada. I believe that "The Harper Government" also has no regard for the voice of the "little people" (ie. Middle/lower class) in this country. I believe that Harper should not be in office and this country is far better off in the hands of Thomas Mulcair!!

      You can't eat money. You need clean air and clean water to survive. Economics are important, but the current government is way out of balance. Science should dictate policy, not vice versa.
