Stop Wasting Taxpayer Funds

    1. Petition by

      Steps Coalition

      Biloxi, MS

Without a major redesign of the plans to spend $570 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for an expansion at the Gulfport State Port, jobs could actually be lost. It is not too late to prevent wasting this huge amount of taxpayer funds. Please work together with community and business leaders of the Gulf Coast to come up with a plan to spend these funds wisely and make the port work for all of us.

The plans have been faulty, tradtional African American communities are negatively affected, purported job estimates were greatly exaggerated, and the environmental effects were never adequately studied, neither the effects on the Mississippi Sound nor the health effects of increased diesel exhaust on affected neighborhoods.

Unless major changes are made for the Port of Gulfport, all the money will go down the drain for naught. The Army Corps of Engineers isw never going to dredge the channel to the needed 46' because it's too costly & the U.S. is up to it's neck in dept already.

Our former governor undoubtedly wanted to make the rich, richer when he diverted funds from Katrina HUD money that was meant for the elderly, minorities, poor, etc. that were affected by the hurricane. Anyone with common sense would know the proposal would not work, especially with Allee claiming Gulfport was going to be the 'Port of the Future' when they were 15-20 years behind in Corp of Engineers dredging to even think of this boondoggle working. But who cares? It appears our politicians want to keep us as Number 50 in the Nation since not the first one brought up concerns for this project and few have since. Are they keeping quiet so they can be reelected? It certainly seems that way. What are you going to do, Governor Bryant to resolve this deal since it is in your lap to act responsibly to the citizens of Gulfport and use this HUD money wisely?

As a resident of MS I am tired of elected officials wasting our tax money and lining the pockets of the good ole boys.

This money was earmarked for Katrina rebuilding. It should never have been diverted for Port expansion. It is just another example of the corrupt Barbour Governorship.
