Humanitarian aid to Palestine promotes peace

    1. Petition by

      UNRWA USA

U.S. aid to Palestinian refugees is being directly threatened by members of the U.S. Congress (see State Department and Foreign Operations Appropriations and United Nations reform bill, H.R. 2829). The United States is the single largest donor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) which provides 4.9 million Palestinian refugees with education, healthcare, and relief and social services. If this aid is cut it will leave millions of Palestinians without food, shelter and access to medical care.

Palestinian refugees, many of whom already live in abject poverty and desperation, depend on UNRWA’s services for their health, their children’s future, and their families’ safety. UNRWA not only addresses the most urgent human needs among this often overlooked community, but also provides them with empowerment programs like microfinance loans, gender-equality initiatives, job creation, vocational training and one of the best school systems in the region, creating future partners in peace through programs that promote self-sufficiency and human dignity.

By funding aid to Palestinian refugees the United States is funding peace and stability that benefits both Palestinians and Israelis. U.S. funding has led to unprecedented stability, security, and opportunities in the West Bank and provides a valuable lifeline in the form of food assistance, relief, and medical aid to Gaza.

People should not be the victims of politics. Tell Congress that during this time of political uncertainty it is imperative that we not forget the Palestinian people who rely on U.S. aid for education, food, healthcare, and physical safety. Tell your member of Congress that UNRWA’s services to Palestinian refugees provide the building blocks for peace by giving the Palestinians it serves a chance at a future with hope and human dignity.

I was in the West Bank last month. While it doesn't compare with what is happening in Gaza, I still saw alot of need and poverty and deprivation. I was in Gaza 2 yrs ago.

I've been an advocate for Palestinian rights and having just returned from 3 months in the Gaza Strip, I saw first-hand, how vital USAID projects are. Pulling US aid to Palestine feeds the extremists rhetoric and hinders efforts to bring peace and build a viable Palestinian state. Cutting aid only hurts US security leaving a vacuum to be filled by another group or leaving Palestinians desperate and willing to turn to other means to get what they need.

How is depriving these already poor people of food, medicine, and clean water going to promote peace?? This is clearly collective punishment!!
