We, the undersigned, are appalled by the brutal treatment of non-violent protesters in front of Bhajanpura police station in Delhi by the Police. The pictures and videos of the incident shows young men and women activist of the Aam Aadmi Party, who were protesting the delay in filing the First Information Report(FIR) by the police in the rape case of young woman were severely beaten and manhandled by the Delhi police. Several of them were admitted to the hospital with broken bones and bleeding wounds. It is an utterly disgusting incident in a democratic nation.
The incident relates to young woman who was detained and raped by two unknown men for last 3 days. She managed to escape and reach the police station with help of an auto-driver but police refused to file the FIR. On hearing this, activists of Aam Aadmi Party gathered in front of the police station and demanded that FIR be filed immediately. Ultimately, police agreed to the demand and filed FIR but not before the activists were harshly beaten up even though the activists were non-violent and didn't provoke or retaliate the police attack.
To make matters worse, police arrested 15 volunteers who were protesting this injustice. They were presented before magistrate at 2:20 AM and some of them were so badly injured that they could not walk and had to be bodily lifted to be presented in front of the magistrate. The volunteers shared the horrific stories of police brutality during detention, especially the incident where one of the activist requested for drinking water and was in turn offered urine by the policeman present there. Even women activists were not spared and beaten badly and had to admitted in the hospital to treat the wounds. As per the laws, women protesters should be handled only be policewoman but that rule was not followed either.
This is extremely unbecoming of a democratic state where people’s right to expression and protest were trampled upon with such disdain. Rape is a horrific crime and the resulting outrage and demand for justice by the concerned is a natural reaction. Instead of comforting the survivor and helping her/him in getting justice and necessary medical attention, Delhi police has time and again tried to cover up the incident. They have also have history of high-handedness in dealing with the protesters. We will not tolerate any such undemocratic, brutal suppression of people’s voice.
We demand immediate action on following:
1. The rape survivor be provided all necessary medical attention and safety
2. The policemen involved in the brutal attacks on non-violent protesters be immediately suspended and criminal charges should be filed against them.
3. Delhi Government and police commissioner publicly apologize for the horrific treatment meted out to the violence victims and provide proper medical attention to all of them.
