Stop the Cranbrook Deer Slaughter!

Dear Mayor and Council of Cranbrook:

I have been following the deer issue in BC. I was shocked to hear that you recently had a meeting to approve the killing of 30 more deer. The meeting was not open to the public. It was announced on February 14, 2013.

Your proposed actions contradict this quote by your Communications officer, Chris Zettel, of August 12, 2012: "I think there's an appetite here perhaps to maybe stand back and wait and see what happens with the court case involving Invermere," said Zettel."If this report comes back and says the process is good and they can continue fine. But if it's a flawed process and we need to change things - if we have to wait a year or two, then that's what we would have to do, but again that's up to council to make that decision," he said.

Was proper public process adhered to? As you are aware, the Invermere court challenge addresses similar important issues. Citizens have a right to adequate community consultation and open disclosure. We need to be properly informed.

Killing wildlife perpetuates killing. Lethal solutions are not the answer. The clover trap and bolt gun killing of deer is not the benign and humane killing method some invested persons make it out to be. Peoples' concerns about the cruelty and abuse are legitimate. Government claims that it is like a slaughter house with domestic animals are not true since these are wild animals who will struggle to escape (Animals in slaughter houses suffer too. See horse slaughter:

The 2010 video of an alledged "vicious and dangerous"  deer attacking a dog was unfounded since the doe was simply protecting her baby.Other claims of public safety threats were blown out of proportion. People also wanted deer killed for eating their flowers.

The city first killed 25 urban deer in November 2011, but 11 were the white-tailed deer who were not the intention of the kill because they were not causing any threats.

Non lethal and natural controls need to be given serious and equal consideration in wildlife management. Municipal bylaws "not attracting/not feeding" need to be enacted. There are progressive models in other cities.
Please do not set the pattern for killing in our communities.

I will be contacting the Vancouver based animal rights/ecology organization, Lifeforce Foundation, to help them stop the Cranbrook Deer Kill ( I also will Boycott Cranbrook Deer Killers by not visiting your slaughter town.

I currently live in Cranbrook and see these deer everyday. This is their home too. It would be inhumane and unethical to murder these beautiful creatures.

Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world...

      * We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity.
