Spring Hill Crematorium Emissions Petition

    1. Petition by

      Thompsons Station, TN

Spring Hill, Tennessee, residents have spent more than a year expressing their concerns about mercury emissions that will be caused by Spring Hill Memorial's proposed crematorium. The proposed crematorium lies on Main Street in the heart of the city's small downtown area. It is within a short distance of homes, schools, and parks. Spring Hill is a young city with its largest number of citizens young families with young children and those just beginning their families. Pages and pages of evidence were presented about the noted effect the mercury vapors can have on unborn infants and young children. This issue was put before the Planning Commission and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The city's elected officials voted to not allow the crematorium in the location at the Funeral Home. Unfortunately it was brought forth again before the Planning Commission, which is not an elected body, and it was approved. The citizens have a right to request a town hall meeting to express their concerns to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. This petition is asking for that town hall meeting. If are signing this petition and live in Spring Hill, Columbia, or Thompson's Station, Tennessee, please include your zip code. We appreciate your support.

Although the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation has apparently agreed to have a town hall meeting on the subject of the crematorium in Spring Hill, we're still gathering support for that important event. Will you please share the link for this petition with your friends and family if you believe the decision to locate a crematorium on Main Street in Spring Hill is wrong.

I live very close to the proposed site of the crematorium. I do not want this in my neighborhood nor do I want my children to breathe the toxic fumes that will be created and released into the air. We must think about the potential repercussions and effects this will have on our health and our loved ones.

I am very concerned about this crematory being located in such a densely populated area, so close to homes, schools, churches and businesses!! Crematories are known to be and are classified by the EPA as GENERATORS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE, as are funeral homes. My entire family lives in close proximity to this location, my grandchildren go to school at Longview and I feel the hazardous waste emissions from this crematory will adversely affect our health and quality of life as well as every man, woman child and animal in Spring Hill! There is absolutely no valid reason to locate a human incinerator in the heart of Spring Hill! I personally feel this is biological terrorism since no safe level of mercury or dioxins has ever been established. Mercury vapors when inhaled are extremely dangerous, and when you take into consideration that only 1/50th of a teaspoon (that is not even a drop) spread upon a 20 acre lake renders all fish in that lake unsafe for human consumption, one can only imagine how small an amount of inhaled mercury can essentially destroy a person's health and their entire life....especially if that person is a small child or infant! There are far too many known and unknown health hazards associated with crematories to justify their existence at all, much less locating one in the heart of a residential area. These businesses should be located in an industrial site far away from homes, schools, churches, businesses and major highways and intersections. AND, even in an industrial location they should always be required to have the very best filter systems and scrubbers! Approving and allowing this crematory to operate is gross negligence on the part of all parties in local, state and federal government!

My feelings are that even a remote chance of health risks is reason to balk at approving this facility or any other such facilities. Current studies show certain levels of mercury are acceptable. Agent orange was once proclaimed to be safe!! No business should be put above the health of any citizen! This proposal was denied by BOMA and our corrupt mayor and his corrupt appointed planning commission found a way to circumvent the will of Spring Hill's citizens and BOMA members. It is no coincidence that the only person on the BOMA to be in favor of this project the mayor found a way to make sure it was approved. This an example of why Tennessee is considered the most corrupt state in our country!!!!

I am a victim of such heavy metal toxins such as mercury and much of my adult life hasn't been a happy one due to finding out I am sensitive to such toxins as mercury and much of the mercury I accumulated in my body to cause me psychical and mental issues I have learned began when becoming exposed to mercury as a child.
