New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut, especially those of us on the coast, have been traumatized by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The outpouring of support has been tremendous. The Governors have called up the national guard. FEMA and the Red Cross have set up emergency assistance stations, and utility workers from across the country and Canada are working 24/7 to restore power. The plans and routines of millions of people have been, and continue to be affected.
Because I have been forced from my home, and have been out since the storm, I have to cancel a planned trip to Florida for this Saturday. I called Spirit airlines to cancel and was informed that their normal cancellation policy is in effect, and that they would charge me $377.91 of the $527 cost (representing 71% of the cost) of my two tickets. The representatives failed to express any understanding of the depth of the problems we face here (no heat, electric, water, shelter, income, expenses) which makes jetting off to Florida at this time impossible. The supervisor gave the same verbatim refusal to deviate from policy. They refused to provide us with anyone at the company headquarters with whom to speak, or any other avenue to pursue this grievance.
There is a complete disconnect between the efforts of some gallant, selfless people who are assisting those in need, and the attitude of Spirit Airlines, who remained focused on the generation of their unconscionable fees. The very least Spirit can do is waive their $125 per seat cancellation fee for those of us in the Hurricane Zone who have to change the travel pans, along with every other aspect of our lives, during this most trying time. Before booking a flight on this airline, please be reminded of their priorities.
