Support an inclusive economy for Tennessee: delay E-verify

Last year the Tennessee legislature passed a law that will require almost all businesses in the state to use E-verify, a federal employment verification program.

E-verify frequently provides employers with bad information on whether an applicant is eligible to work. The system does not adequately protect job applications from racial discrimination. It also poses significant costs to small businesses who will soon be required to use the system.

Tennessee Senator Reginald Tate has sponsored a bill to delay implementation of E-verify for small businesses until January 2014. This will give lawmakers an opportunity to measure and understand the impact of E-verify before expanding the program to include almost all private businesses in the state.

The E-Verify law has opened the door to discrimination and has caused an undue burden on employers and employees. We need to understand what impact it has had before we make it even more widespread. SB3506 will give us this opportunity.

This bill goes against my faith, in addition to raising more concerns about accuracy of information than it answers.
