Save First Place Daycare for Homeless Toddlers

    1. Petition by

      HEAR US

Toddlers (0-5-year-old) are the largest subset of the homeless population. Most spend their most formative years in rough conditions, not helpful at all for their development. Parents often lack access to quality, affordable daycare, preventing their looking for housing or employment.

The First Place Kids Center in Eugene, OR offers "effective, supportive, and quality education to families and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in a therapeutically-oriented preschool environment."

But they are slated to close by June 3rd because of lack of funding. These kids, and countless more coming after them, will have no place to be during the day. The burden on the parents is huge. The loss of this program on the toddlers is traumatic.

Urge Mayor Kitty Piercy (who seems to be sensitive to these issues) to go to bat for First Place (perhaps calling attention to this atrocity statewide). Ask her to make sure homeless kids count.

This is Eugene we're talking about---home of some of the finest athletic facilities in the world! We've got to do better for our most vulnerable community members: our kids.

I hadn't been able to read these comments on our petition until now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the outrageous disregard of these toddlers!

Young families need all the help they can get. Homeless families need help with their kids while parents look for work and shelter or take classes to learn a trade with a living wage.

First Place Kids Center and others like it help reduce the risk of child abuse and/or neglect in addition to helping parents find a more stable future for their family.

Hello Mayor Piercy, i have no doubt in my mind that you have a heart for this program and don't want to see it cut. Our church has been very active in housing and providing for the needs of the Homeless Shelter and I volunteered this year. I especially wanted to be with the children as I was a teacher of K-1 students for several years. I brought books, trains, tracks, etc. To be honest, I was overwhelmed at the number of preschoolers and toddlers...many of them with challenges and a few with what seemed development disabilities. All I could think of was how important it was that they have preschool/appropriate child care to help them transition to kindergarten. It is wonderful that they have had a predictable routine for their day where professionals can provide them with a array of nurturing ,role modeling, a safe place to be, etc. These precious children need it so badly as they go from church to church each week to lay their head (or there car or wherever). I URGE YOU TO DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO KEEP FUNDING THIS PROGRAM. I can not longer teach due to a medical condition but I would like to volunteer at this vital program and help however I can.

Thank you for talking time to read this.

      With appreciation,

      Joanne Hubata-Vacek
