Today over 1/6 of the American population is under the age of 19 and over 2,000,000 juveniles are arrested annually. Just as teachers, social workers, and doctors must be aware of the special needs of children in their care, police must possess basic developmental competence and awareness of the best practices for working with children and youth in order to better serve our communities.

Developmental awareness is critical, in my mind, for any person working in any capacity of social work, be it schooling, medicine, and certainly law. This seems to me to be good common sense.

All youth are important to me. There are far too many youngsters in the criminal justice system. I see them in prison, as a volunteer. YOUNG is what stands out in my mind. This is not the way it should be. Police behavior and reports make a difference in how things go for the young person.

This is important to me because I don't think that police officers today understand the adolescents that they have to deal with, and I believe that they would be able to do their jobs more effectively if they did.
