Victory

For a decade, citizen activists have been standing up to Edison International and calling for the Fisk and Crawford coal plants to close. Today, the campaign reached a historic victory – the Fisk coal plant in Pilsen will shut down in 2012 and the Crawford coal plant in Little Village will shut down by 2014. Greenpeace is proud to have worked alongside the Clean Power Coalition and change.org to hold Edison International accountable for operating some of the oldest and dirtiest coal plants in the country.

This campaign was rooted in the hard work and persistence of community activists throughout Chicago. Thanks to support on change.org, the residents of Chicago can finally breathe freely.

For years, Midwest Generation, a subsidiary of Edison International, has operated old, dirty coal-fired power plants in the city of Chicago. The Fisk and Crawford plants are responsible for an unacceptable amount of hardship on the local community.

In fact, pollution from the Fisk and Crawford  plants prematurely kills 42 people every year. That human cost is paid entirely by the communities who live in the shadows of these two aging plants. You won’t find it on Edison International’s bottom-line.

But the community is fighting back. And the Change.org community has an important and urgent role to play in supporting them.

Edison International is a national company and is part of a broader industry that affects all of us. They need to hear the message not just from community activists, but from the American public.

    10. Straight to You From Chicago's Smokestacks: Shut Down Fisk and Crawford

If I had to chose one city in which to climb a smokestack, Chicago—aka "The Windy City"—probably would be low on my list. But what's a death-defying stunt or two, when the lives of 42 people are at stake?
That's what a few brave community...

I'm tired of experiencing the conveniences of modern America. Well-lit rooms, comfortable temperatures, access to global communication with the touch of a few keys... The guilt of it all is wearing on me.

Please, Edison. Stop generating power to make this possible. Take me back to simpler times when we lived in mud huts, foraged for berries and banged sticks against rocks for entertainment.

      Thank you.

The government says app. 30,000 people in the US die each year from air pollution. That's right, pollution kills as I have been saying for years. There are cleaner alternatives, but big corps. want to make as much money as possible, damn the costs. Unpatriotic in every way.

After Japan this should be a non issue, no brainer, especially when there are so many other options.
