Polk County State's Attorney: Drop Felony Charges against 16 year old Kiera Wilmot

Sixteen year old student Kiera Wilmot performed a chemistry experiment in her high school's lab to see what would happen when some chemicals mixed. The 8oz water bottle holding the chemicals' top popped off and some smoke was emitted, no one was injured and no property was damaged. She did not know beforehand it would cause that reaction. Her principal initially defended her actions as an accident but school security took her into police custody where she is facing FELONY charges and has been expelled from school. The code of conduct states that there must have been intent to cause harm, but as Kiera and the principal stated, there was not ill intent. This is a clear case of wrongful criminilization and will destroy Kiera's bright future. To:
Joe Hall, Chief of Police (Bartow, FL)
Ronald Pritchard, Bartow Principal
Dr. John Stewart, Polk County Superintendent
Jerry Hall, (Polk County) State Attorney Tenth Judicial Circuit
States Attorney Jerry Hill,
Drop Felony Charges against 16 year old Kiera Wilmot for performing a science experiment. It was an accident that harmed no one. Don't discourage students from entering the sciences.

Sincerely,

I am a chemistry student. A school is a place to learn, not be punished when unpredictable results happen during science experiments.

It is utter non-sense to criminalize a school age kid with a curious mind doing experimentation on school ground. I understand the concern of school official after Columbine High School but, no harm was done. Science is about exploration. If a DA is unable to see this for what it is, then common sense is dead.

Kiera did nothing wrong, and is just a child, and I strongly believe if she were not black, she wouldn't be in this position.

This is important to me because once again it illustrates the reprehensible lack of common sense and ethics applied by our so called leaders in positions of power. Having spent a long career working in the field of Engineering Sciences I understand that the results of even controlled experiments can have undesirable results. Without focusing on race or financial status, which btw I do believe is in play here, what is the real lesson to be learned except that of marring a 16 year olds life. The message of actions have consequences should apply to the persons responsible for such an egregious decision. What a waste of taxpayers money.
