Ontario MPPs: We support renewable energy in Ontario!

    1. Petition by

      Federation of Community Power Co-operatives

On Thursday April 18th, Bill 39 will be voted on to go to the second reading. Private Member's Bill 39: An Act to provide for control by local municipalities over renewable and affordable energy undertakings. This proposed Bill, if enacted, would turn back the clock on the progress that Ontario has made on Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation.

You can read the full text of the Bill 39 here, but its 'highlights' include: killing-off the Feed-in Tariff Program, imposing additional restrictions on the placement of wind turbines, allowing municipalities to 'opt-out' of energy conservation, and limiting the Ontario Power Authority's ability to procure Renewable Energy.

What's At Stake?

Not only would Bill 39 destroy Ontario's leadership in Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, it would also signal the demise of Ontario's burgeoning Renewable Energy industry. This would result in the loss of the thousands of good jobs that this industry supports, at a time when Ontario's economy can least afford it.

What Can You Do?

Please show your support by signing our petition against Bill 39.

You can also make a real difference by letting your Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) know that you oppose Bill 39 and support investing in Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation for Ontario's future.

The best ACTION to take at this time is to CALL YOUR MPP or VISIT their constituency OFFICE IN PERSON and share with them that you are a member of their constituency and that you support renewable energy and the benefits it provides this province. Let them know that we are on the right path with the Green Energy Act and Feed-in tariff program. Together they have provided an unprecedented opportunity to create jobs and wealth in Ontario.

If you do not know who your MPP is, here is how you can find out. First, find your Electoral District (ED) here: http://fyed.elections.on.ca/fyed/en/form_page_en.jsp. You can then find the MPP who represents your ED here: http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/members/members_current.do?locale=en.

By speaking out, you will help to ensure that the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation gains that took years of grassroots efforts to achieve are protected. Please also circulate this email widely, Ontarians have a right to know that Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation are under attack.

    2. Bill 39 defeated!

Last Thursday, the Ontario Legislative Assembly voted to defeat Bill 39, a victory! However, it was a close vote (40 to 33) and we expect this issue to arise again, particularly if we're headed for an election in the next year. We urge you to remain active on this issue and continue to let Ontario decision-makers know you want a renewable energy future for Ontario!

Please take a moment to read through the proceeding details and find the list of MPPs who voted for and against the bill (scroll down to the bottom of this page: http://bit.ly/12CAEKd). Consider contacting your MPP to thank them for voting, express your support for the Green Energy Act, or ask them why they were not present for the vote.

Renewable energy and energy conservation enable the triple bottom line whereas this bill appeals to misinformed people to only look at the short term profits. We need to preserve our depleting, non-renewable fossil fuel resources for the long term for their high value uses rather than unnecessarily squandering them in the short term. Keep the money here supporting local jobs rather than putting it in the accounts of large multi-national corporations.

Because the co 2 in the atmosphere is now reaching 400 parts per million

And our planet is warming exponentially,

We need more renewable energy not less,

      And we need it now!!!!!!!!!
