Ontario Government: Respect the request from Toronto City Councillors for ranked ballots

    1. Petition by

Ranked Ballot Initiative of Toronto (RaBIT)

Toronto City Council has formally asked the province for permission to use ranked ballots for municipal elections. We're calling on all provincial parties to respect the wishes of Toronto's elected City Councillors, and to support local democracy.

The Liberals, New Democrats, Conservatives and Greens ALL use runoff voting to choose their own leaders and candidates.  If it's good enough for them - it's good enough for Toronto.

The campaign for municipal ranked ballots is a multi-partisan effort, and now is the time to move it forward!  It's a small, simple change that would make Toronto's elections more fair, diverse, inclusive and friendly.

Accurate representation of a populations interests would be far better served by ranked ballots.

I just voted in the provincial election, and I feel I was "fearmongered" into voting strategically. I want to be able to vote with my heart, and I think ranked ballots will allow thoughtful voters to have more democratic power. I lived in Australia for 2 years, and there was an election there - you can vote ranked ballot if you choose to. I think this is the way to go.

I want people to vote with their conscience and not strategically. Politics is run like a marketing campaign these days and as a result, I don't trust anything with purpose will actually get done - as every word communicated during election campaigns sounds like fluff. I'm hoping that if citizen's views are better represented, politicians will actually say what they intend to do, instead of clouding their intentions in negative advertising.
