Raise the rainbow flag over Napa City Hall in support of LGBTQ residents

    1. Petition by

      Ian Stanley

      Napa, CA

As someone who grew up in Napa since second grade (1984), I (and many others) experienced firsthand the lack of visibility and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people here in our beautiful valley. I struggled with feeling isolated and unwelcome, and deep in my heart wanting to know I was okay--and not alone. I searched for signs anywhere--at home, at church, around town--that I was valued and that I belonged.

In recognition of LGBTQ Pride month, June, and the thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning people that call Napa their home or their favorite vacation destination--in recognition of the many contributions to our communities by LGBTQ people (both visible and invisible)--in recognition of their many straight allies, neighbors, friends and family--in recognition that the City of Napa values and welcomes diversity, I am asking that the City of Napa raise the rainbow flag over City Hall (or another prime, visible, City owned location) for at least one day during Napa Valley LGBTQ Pride, 2013: June 14-23.

What a powerful, hope-giving sign of support and welcome the rainbow flag over Napa would be!

To:
Mayor Jill Techel, City of Napa
Raise the rainbow flag over Napa City Hall in support of LGBTQ residents.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Support for LGTBQ community would be greatly appreciated

I wish to enthusiastically lend my support to Ian Stanley's request that the city of Napa display the rainbow flag at least one day outside City Hall during Pride Week in June ("Petition asks Napa to fly rainbow flag," March 30). Allow me to explain why I so strongly endorse Ian's idea.

    7. Calistoga & other Napa County towns to fly the rainbow flag, too?

      Ian Stanley

Just heard from a gentleman in Calistoga who asked their mayor to raise the rainbow flag as well. Sounds like it's progressing very well. Is anyone else asking in other parts of Napa County? Keep me updated at our facebook page: http://facebook.com/lgbtnapa

    9. Napa Reg article highlights mayor's support, petition's success

      Ian Stanley

This morning we hit 600 signatures just as the Napa Register published (first, online) a nice article about the petition. Let's keep the pressure on & keep inviting new people to sign. Let's reach 1000 supporters!!

And, while I'll personally avoid the comments to the articles (it can get hateful and distracting), please keep it kind if you choose to reply--those who disagree with our position are waiting to jump on anyone saying something nasty.

Petition asks Napa to fly rainbow flag

During Napa Valley LGBTQ Pride week in June, Napa will be host to a celebration of its gay and lesbian citizens. If Ian Stanley has his way, at least one day will feature the gay rights movement's emblematic rainbow flag flying at the city's heart - the flagpole outside City Hall on School Street.

    10. The Mayor called!

      Ian Stanley

Jill Techel, Napa's Mayor, called me this morning, expressing that absolutely the City of Napa welcomes and acknowledges the LGBTQ people that live, work, go to school and visit our beautiful community. (My paraphrase.) The rest is in development and sounds positive. I'll keep you posted.

    11. Napa Register coverage soon; still no word from City of Napa

      Ian Stanley

The Napa Reg called today, asking about the petition and the backstory and my story and what I was hoping to gain. They also asked if I had heard from the City of Napa yet, and I have not. We just blew past 500 signatures of support in less than 24 hours! After the Reg article is published and the signatures slow down, I'll print and deliver to City Hall. Let's keep sharing: http://bit.ly/rainbowovernapa

This visible reminder of Bay Area diversity would be a wonderful expression of Pride that goes well beyond the borders of SF and would reach people traveling from all over.

Because God gave man free will. And God is the highest power. Why should earthly laws over rule that right of free will? Doesn't make sense to me. I believe every human being has the right to carry out his or her life as they see fit. True Peace On Earth will be when each individual is free to make all of their own choices about their life with no fear in doing so. It is really very simple. ~

I am a homosexual man who lives in Napa, and would like to reach out to the community, answer questions about homosexuality to those who have questions, and see a more diverse and understanding community grow and unfold in this already diverse and beautifully colored valley.
