Hotel Dieu CHILD Development Centre: Stop the cutbacks

1 in 54 boys have autism. My son has Autism. He is 3 and nonverbal but with the help of the Child Development Centre at the Hotel Dieu hospital he is learning the picture exchange program. (PECS) Finally he is starting to communicate with us. Communicate so that we both understand. He use to only look at me straight in the eye begging for me to understand what his gestures were trying to tell me. He knew what he wanted but he couldn't say it. I,as his mother, should know. Every mother should be able to communicate with their child. Progress has happened over the last 3 months. However, now has come word that due to a maternity leave a social workers postion will not be filled and in 3 months a main speech therapist position will also not be filled. All because of cutbacks. This is my sons wonderful speech therapist. There will be no 1:1 speech assistance once a week for my child (and many other children) to learn, to prosper and for me as a parent to learn and continue at home. Over a year we had to wait for speech therapy. Numbers are on the rise for autism and yet things are being cutback! You may be thinking this doesn't affect you -- but what if it does??   What if in 6 mnths from now you notice something may be wrong with your son or daughter. It may not be autism it may be something else. Would you want to wait years for professional assistance???   With the proper help and care these children may someday be scientests, leaders, doctors and so much more.
I am petitioning so that as parents we demand that our children get proper care. The first years of life are the most important. Let us not cover their tiny mouths and turn away from them.

The TV news station here in Kingston ON found out about the petition and called for an interview that was originally setup for today. Soo after the development centre staff phoned to set up an appointment to discuss the matter at hand-- set up for Tuesday-- soon after the newstation staff phoned back again and changed our on camera interview to Wednesday morning. Interesting.....so there you have it....its going to be a busy week and check here for more news. Everyone is free and "allowed" to share this petition on their facebook page. In fact I encourage it. The meeting is in 24hrs the more signatures the better!!

Thanks again everyone for the signatures. Keep them coming!
I have been asked about the picture that I have of a child in the grassy/woodsy area (above). That is a pic of my son when he was about 18 mnths. I knew something was wrong at 14mnths. He spoke 4 words at one time but now doesnt speak. At around 13mnths words stopped (though I didnt hear them regularly). He stopped turning to his name, lots of hand flapping, walking on toes and a distance in his eyes. I like the pic above for many reasons. It shows my son as he is in many aspects.....loves to go on adventures but he seems to be locked in a world by himself wandering. Trying to get out. He may be walking through an uneven and grassy terrain but he keeps trudging through. Determined. That all being said know that he is a happy boy (and I intend to keep it that way). A smilie that lights up a room but without proper help I fear that smilie might change.....

Children have great learning potentials and I believe we should expose them to as much as they can handle especially if the start off life with a disadvantage.

My Friends little boy was just diagnosed. The waiting lists are too long and time is of the essence. More Cutbacks mean more delays
