Help The Pups Mistreated in Wealthy CA City

There is a small colony of California Harbor Seals that have chosen this beach to have their pups and haul out for rest during the day and night. The beach is tiny ( approx. 150m to 200 m long) and because it is in an urban area (La Jolla), people interfere with and harass these animals on a daily basis. There is no enforcement of the "marine mammal act" by anyone who watches the area. The beach needs to be closed to people! As it is, people can walk right up to the seals and disturb them endlessly...and people do! They have thrown sand at them, rocks, and seashells. People try to touch them, splash them, and even pet them! These are beautiful, docile , friendly animals but their numbers are dwindling because of the mistreatment and encroachment of people.

I love this place and the seals. Please protect it and make it educational - not controversial.

People abuse these wild animals with frequency and their behavior is extremely disturbing - the seals deserve better protection. I used to volunteer to help protect the seals and educate the public about them - it's time for the government to step up it's participation in their protection. People love watching the seals - please don't continue to allow them to be mistreated

      Dear Margaret,

We have Rangers. We have had rangers that have a conflict of interest related to watching the seals! If I told you the whole story, you'd be boiling mad. Many horrible things have occurred under the supervision of our so called "park rangers" . That is why we are pursuing further protection for these animals. People have literally gotten away with murder here. In Yellowstone, if you throw a dime in a stream, you get ticketed and fined. That's what should be happening here. Our seals have recently received a "Seal Cam" from a private donor and the mayor. Now, the seals can be seen 24 hours a day....and so can all the other shenanigans that have been going on for the last decade. See for yourself what the life of these animals is like...and stay tuned, summer is coming and out comes human behavior that is not to be believed!! Thank you for caring and for signing!

I have been to this beach and seen these seals when I was on vacation. It was wonderful to see these seals in a natural habitat and great for children to watch the seals.

Would it be possible to have a "Ranger" there to educate people to appreciate the seals and keep order so that no one harms them either intentionally or unintentionally. Limiting viewing hours and charging a small admission could perhaps offset this cost. It is wonderful to view seals in their natural habitat, but people have to know what the limits are on human behavior so that safe condition are maintained for both animals and people.

so that people can be educated about these animals
