Government of Australia: Reverse the decision to take Parenting Payment off sole parents

    2. Petition by

      Broome, Australia

Sole parents have lost their parenting payment and have been put on to unemployment payments which is a lesser amount and has harsher requirements. It is an attack on one of the most vulnerable groups in Australia and pushes them into a poverty trap. Sole parents, of whom 80% are women, are raising a large proportion of our next generation. Often they are women escaping from violent and controlling relationships. Usually they have found full time employment within two years of obtaining the parenting payment, but they need strong support in this transitional stage after separation, where their children are particularly vulnerable. This measure by the Australian Labor Government is an attack on these families and will not produce any net savings for the tax payer, who will ultimately bear the health and other social costs of the damage done.

Children need food on the table and a roof over their heads.

This decision puts sole parents in an even worse position than before in finding secure housing.

Cutting the food budget for Australia's most needy children is Government stupidity. Who's going to fight the war for you next time? A bunch of self funded retirees???

As a single parent of three affected by the changes, the stress and financial strain have made life even harder than before. Children should be the priority.

I am a already working, yet still being punished, pushed onto Newstart, yet complying. It's impossible for me to do anymore hours work without it being to the detriment of mine and my childs well being, yet under this current circumstance I'm at least $300 per fortnight worse off than when on Parenting Payment. Please HAVE A HEART!.

Having been a sole parent in the past I understand how hard it is to work and raise children on your own with no other family support. Our children need at least 1 parent who can be their full time to raise them.

I am a single parent who is a university student and struggling financially. If I had not moved back with my parents I would not be able to afford even to eat properly or pay my electricity bills because of the housing affordability crisis in Australia. In addition my ex husband has been retrenched from his job, which means I lose an additional $500 per month. When I was put on Newstart, I lost $160 per fortnight. I then changed to Austudy and increased my study load so I could at least get the $1000 per semester to pay for my text books, extra petrol etc. Now I find that they want to change this to a loan, and put it on top of my HECS loan because they are taking huge amounts from university budgets. Everywhere I turn I cannot win. On every side it is hard. How ridiculous that age 45 I am economically as good as I was at 18. How is this any future for my son?
