Victory

After over 185,000 people signed Safeway customer Douglas Castro's petition, Safeway announced that Ryan Young would return to work with backpay. In a statement, Safeway said, "We appreciate the customers who took time to share their opinions about this incident."

Ryan Young said, "I am deeply grateful to everyone who signed the petition on Change.org. Knowing that I had all these people standing behind me and that I wasn't alone really helped me through this difficult time. I'll be returning to work soon and I'm ready to move forward. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to help me out."

Douglas Castro said, "When I learned about Ryan's story on the local news, as a Safeway customer, I was shocked and I wanted to help. Ryan is a hero for stopping that assault, and I'm happy to hear that Safeway listened to its customers and ended Ryan's suspension. After seeing so many people join my campaign in such a short amount of time, I hope other people will be inspired to take action online when they see things that aren't right in their communities too."

Success!

The support for Mr. Young was immense as the petition gathered more thatn 180,000 signatures of people who believed Mr. Young acted in the most appropiate manner given the circumstances. Safeway has reinstanted Mr. Young along with backpay and benefits.

On April 21, 2012, Safeway employee Ryan Young intervened when he saw a customer assaulting his pregnant girlfriend. The incident took place in a Safeway store located in the city of Del Rey Oaks, California. Local law enforcement stands behind Mr. Young's actions (source) but despite this Safeway has since suspended Mr. Young without pay.

Mr. Young told local journalists that he was motivated to step in because his own wife is five months pregnant. Now, he is stressed that he hasn't been able to earn an income for his family and doesn't know if Safeway will allow him to return to his job.

As a customer at the Del Rey Oaks store and a security officer myself at a local community college, I was shocked to hear how Safeway has treated Mr. Young -- and I know many others agree. I believed strongly that Safeway's punitive stance was unfair to Mr. Young and something had to be done.

I refused to give a kid with a Barlow (The 'standard' Cub Scout model) Pocket Knife (Leaning on the counter, ON his knife arm! Which told me Cub Scouts had NOT led to so much as Basic Training!) try to "rob" me at a Kwik Shop in South Omaha one night; but, given the way that his 'floral pattern' paper towel/mask (tucked into his "rag", with the eye holes cut into it) flapping in the air, and the fact tha Customers were lining up behind him - Just as UN-afraid of..No! Utterly Bemused BY 'Juniors' attempt to play Clyde for some would-be Bonnie awaiting her 'heroes' arrival, back in His Dads rec-room, as I was! - I just keyed off the Registers, stuck the keys in my pocket, and stood him down...

Now, you'd think I was Heroic - that I saved the day - but Corporate Policy would'a had me give him the money; and, then, once it was known in 'the hood' that I was "an easy mark", to do it again, and again, and again....just because that's the way of the world.

Thank you for doing the right thing Safeway, and understanding that every real man is driven to protect his household, and even that of his fellow neighbor. Every real man has these kind of instincts.
