Sign Language is a largely used language by another part of this world that we do not have full access to. Deaf people are usually the ones to attempt communication with us while we do little to accommodate them. There is a way to solve it by introducing an American Sign Language class. There is a significant interest in making this class more available. Not only would these classes help other majors, including but also not limited to special needs majors and the honors department, this class would fulfill the foreign language requirement. Many campuses accept this as a foreign language, which Fitchburg State University does, but they also provide the opportunity to take the class during the normal fall and spring semesters. Fitchburg State only offers the class during the summer. Classes in the summer cost extra and do not allow a student to take on a job to gain funds for the upcoming school year that they normally participate in. To solve this, we need to make the classes more accessible to students during the usual class semesters. The teacher that taught this in previous semesters has encuraged this pettition and knows that this may help push for a faster welcome of ASL. He wants everyone to understand that ASL is importaint, not just to him but to alot of people on campus as well.

As a CODA, a Child of Deaf Adults, I believe that the opportunity to have this class would broaden many horizons and allow students to learn a language that is not only useful but also fun. There is already a deaf presence on campus and if we can make the campus more accessible to the deaf world, then we can accommodate more deaf students in the future. American Sign Language is not just a class, its a beautiful, artistic language that you learn for life.

If that isn't enough to sign this, read these for more reasons to learn and teach sign language:

I know adding your name to what may be a silly document may mean next to nothing , but to us at Fitchburg State University, it means everything. We thank you for any help you provide to us. Please help us bring back American Sign Language to campus again.

Sincerely,

I sent this to the head of academic affairs and he sent it to the previous teacher of the course who sent it to his head of the communications department. They have been discussing it for a few days and they have considered bringing in an adjunct professor to teach it. We have officially moved from baby steps to giant leaps! Thank you all for the help!

    2. Wow, you are all amazing.

We hit 150 :D I was scrolling down the page to see who had signed and I noticed a lot of reasons people had written when they signed this. I didn't know there were that many! I thank you all for the support and you all are truly supporting a great cause. Just 100 signatures left. It seems like a steep mountain to climb but we can do it. I talked to a teacher for some advice and he gave me some people to email and mention this to. Hopefully, progress will come quickly. Who knows, maybe I can co-teach the class? Haha, one can only hope :) But like I've said before, please share this with people you think will sign this. The more, the better! Go ahead and share this with people who may not sign it but can share this with people who will. We need all the help we can get to reach that goal. Love you all!

I am a CODA too, and agree this should be available all year, not just during the summer.

The number of people this affects is tremendous. It is unbelievable this doesn't already exist

I have two deaf children, a deaf granddaughter and deaf nieces who would appreciate others being able to "speak" their language.

A large number of students at this school are nursing, education, and special education majors. Some will go to graduate school for PT and OT. They will have to deal with people with a variety of disorders, and deafness is likely to be one of them.

All schools should be accommodating to ALL students.
