STOP the destruction of Fanfiction.net!

    1. Petition by

Ever since it was opened, Fanfiction.NET had always been a place for avid fans-- of ANYTHING-- to feel at home. To express whatever is on our minds and truly let our love for characters, plotlines and scenarios shine through.

Now all of a sudden, FF.net has decided to go through a massive upheaval and remove thousands of stories from its library, some of the best fanfics ever written, gone, never to be read again. They are removing anything involving sexual situations, or violence, or inspired by a song, the list goes on. And we as readers see this as a gross waste of talent and incredible material.

Fanfiction.net has always been a place for us writers to 'Unleash our imagination' as the tagline states, and now we are having that right to freedom of speech and expression taken away from us. Since when are they allowed to dictate what goes into our stories? They are OUR pieces of work. What if the violence or sexual content is part of the plotline? This whole situation is absurd. There are better ways to deal with 'inappropriate' content than to remove it altogether. What about adult filters? Age restrictions? There are so many other options!!

So I'm asking please, for all us readers, writers, and fans alike... STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF FF.NET!!!!

Okay so I have a few things to say.

The first thing is that I thank you for all the signatures and supportive messages, and also that the name I created this petition under is not actually my real name, so I had a bit of a giggle at some of them. :D

The second is, that I'm not the one lifting the signature limit-- it does it by itself when we reach the previous limit.

Thirdly, since the petition has gained popularity, I have been informed that the number of stories being purged from Fanfiction.Net has decreased dramatically. I am still able to find a lot of mature fanfics around, and that is always great to see.

The petition has been submitted on multiple occasions to FF.NET staff, and hopefully it is going to have a lasting effect.

Thank you again for your overwhelming support!

I didn't realize this would go so absolutely viral! 5,000 signatures in one day! If the rate of growth stays the same, I will keep raising the goal-- the more signatures, the more FF might take some action. Keep fighting against internet censorship, guys!

Because fanfiction.net is where I first discovered and fell in love with the idea of fanfiction. It's the site that encouraged me to start writing seriously instead of just the dabbling I'd done previously. It's the site that help me improve my writing style and expand ideas by reading the works of other amateur writers.

I actually remember a time when the site required you to have an account and there was a button one had to push to read stories with "Mature Content", just like any other site with things children shouldn't be reading. I remember when it was suppose to be the PARENTS responsibility to keep their underage children from watching or reading something on the internet they shouldn't, not the responsibility of the authors to "censor" their works in case their fragile little underage minds went through the well warned process of reading something with "mature" content. What is the point of have a tagline reading "Unleash Your Imagination" if leashing it --nay, CAGING IT-- is precisely what the site ends up doing? Why bother with image editors that only 1% of the people on the site even care about when they could bring back that proper M17-rated content filter they had in the beginning? If there are brats out there accessing things they KNOW they're not suppose to and poking their noses in where they don't belong, how is that the problem of an OPEN CONTENT fanfiction site? Why not just give up and rename the site "G-ratedFanfictionSafeForDisobedientLittleBrats.net"?

I'll be honest in saying I've tried moving to other fanfiction sites when I got fed up with fanfiction.net insisting everything had to be a safe read for those still in Primary School, but they all seemed to have had the same problems we're now encountering on the site from the beginning or it was impossible to FIND anything without having to slog through page after page of stories not even related to what you're looking for. I always found myself coming back to fanfiction.net despite my annoyance with them.
