India's Narcondam Island and the endangered Narcondam Hornbill (Rhyticeros narcondami) are at threat.
Narcondam is an extremely remote, tiny island in the Andaman and Nicobar Island group, and is home to about 300 Narcondam hornbill, a species that is found nowhere else in the world. It is a notified Wildlife Sanctuary. The island is uninhabited but for a small police outpost. In India, the hornbill is listed under
The Indian Coast Guard has proposed to build a Radar station and a diesel power generation unit on the island. The proposed plan includes building a wide 2km road through virgin forests thereby destroying hundreds of trees and disturbing the unique features of the lushly forested land and its small population of endangered Hornbills.
In a meeting of the standing committee of the National Board of Wildlife on June 13, eminent conservationists M.D.Madhusudan had pitched for its rejection for the dangers it posed to the survival of the bird and the fragile ecosystem. After a field visit, the committee, headed by the Director of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) Asad R. Rahmani, recommended its abandonment.
Environment experts are baffled at why the Indian Coast Guard wants to build the project here when an alternative option at Landfall island is already available.
The Ministry of Environment and Forests has the final regarding this project. I am calling on Minister Mrs. Jayanti Natrajan to take a bold stand and reject environmental clearance for this project based on the committee recommendation.
