Restore the buildings at the Athens Asylum and maintain them for posterity

    1. Petition by

Athens County Historical Society and Museum

The buildings of the Athens Asylum belong to all the people of Athens County and Ohio. The primary buildings were built in 1868 and are a tribute to all the people who worked there and were patients there. These buildings are architectural masterpieces and historically significant. The Athens Asylum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We understand that you are planning to tear down many of these buildings. Please stop all plans for demolition and work with the Athens County Historical Society and Museum to find alternatives for reuse of the buildings. Save the Athens Asylum!

To:
Dr. Roderick J. McDavis, President, Ohio University
Ohio University Board of Trustees, Ohio University
Restore the buildings at the Athens Asylum and maintain them for posterity

Sincerely,

I am increasingly aware that old buildings are still a thriving useful tool for the community.

I was born in Athens in 1933 and grew up ther being very aware of The Athens State Hospital. We went sledding on the hills there and skated on the ponds. In summer we visited the alegator in the pond with our parents. We first saw milking machines in the dairy barn. As an adult I have come to know the horror of this place but the buildings are beautiful. It would be a hugh loss to Athens if the buildins are destroyed. This is a big part of the history of Athens. My family has been involved with Ohio University since my grandfather, Robert L. Clutter was a student there. Many relatives are graduates as I am. Please save this historic place.
