200 dogs have been poisoned and their bodies are thrown in garbage dumps in Satara. The reason for this revenge attack and illegal culling of dogs is the death of a 5 year old boy after he was bitten by strays.
The death of the boy and the revenge killing of the stray dogs does makes me sad but the the onus of these successive incidents lies on the satara mucipilaty.Had they not stopped the successful sterilisation programme 4 years back things wouldn't have come to a head. The stray population wouldn't have exploded and Ramakant would have lived today.
President of NGO Animal Welfare Trust, Dhiren Rajpurohit, slammed the civic councilfor failing to protect the animals. "Our trust had conducted over 1,000 sterilizations till 2008, but the council terminated our contract ."
Animal rights activist Manoj Oswal told Mirror, “This sterilisation programme has not been done properly, which is why the problem has increased to this level.
Though CEO of Satara Council have denied any hand in the illegal culling of dogs sources have said that certain ground staff working in the council gave instructions on mixing poison in the food that was fed to the strays and ways to quietly dump their bodies.
I am calling on Satara District Collector Dr.Ramaswamy to order an investigation into the illegal culling of dogs, book the accused under murder charges and immediately start sterilisation programme for the stray dogs.
