Victory

A win! The Discovery Channel came under plenty of heat when news reports indicated its decision not to air "On Thin Ice," the final episode of the Frozen Planet focused on climate change. Instead, Discovery planned to re-edit the highly-anticipated nature documentary to 6 parts, meaning U.S. viewers would miss out on the undeniable impact of the full, dedicated episode displaying the ways in which climate change is devastating the Earth's polar regions.

Less than 48 hours after more than 75,000 people signed Claudia Abbott-Barish's petition on Change.org, Discovery Channel announced that it has decided to air the full seventh climate episode.

"I am so completely bowled over by the support, more so than the actual outcome, which now seems almost secondary to the experience of such speedy mass-mobilization. Thank you everyone! Well done!," said Claudia Abbott-Barish.

A big Thank You to all of the petition signers for taking action. And be sure to watch the full series when it premiers in the U.S. on March 18, 2012.

Update: Discovery has announced this morning it will be airing the seventh episode. A full victory notice will come soon. Great work!

The Discovery Channel has chosen not to air the full final episode of the much anticipated Frozen Planet series, written and produced by the same folks that brought us Blue Planet and Planet Earth, two staggeringly beautiful documentary series on the marvel that is our planet. The subject of the final series is global warming and climate change, and reflects on some effects of human impact on the natural world.

Discovery Channel prides itself on revealing the mysteries and unseen worlds of our planet. The Climate Change episode has the potential to move a lot of people, from one of the leading nations in global emissions, towards greater stewardship of this precious earth. This move acts in defiance of Discovery Channel's original aims, which was to inspire the public about the world around them. The American public has a right to be inspired.

Please air the final episode of the Frozen Planet series.

Hooray! The NYTimes published just hours ago that all 7 episodes of Frozen Planet will start airing in March. Due to a bombardment of over 70,000 emails from your good selves, we will now be able to see the footage and hear the important messages and information conveyed by the final episode. I am so completely bowled over by the support, more so than the actual outcome, which now seems almost secondary to the experience of such speedy mass-mobilization. Thank you everyone! Well done!

I don't even know how to express my shock and appreciation for the number of signatures this petition gained over night. Yesterday began with my surprise at having hit 5,000 signatures in a matter of hours, and this morning I awoke to utter amazement. The original goal of 10,000 signatures seemed far fetched in my mind (having never started a petition before), but beyond my wildest imagination we have surpassed continuously raised signature ceilings only to be blasted out of the water. Thank you so much. Thank yourselves. It would be and will be incredible to see the final episode aired in this country, and this overwhelming support makes that an ever greater reality.

So much love and respect to all of you,
      Claudia

I want to learn the truth about climate change and in not showing the last episode it feels as I'm being denied that right.
